The book I’m introducing today, which I would directly translate into English as “Understanding Ukraine: A Topic to Explore from Around Secondary School Age“, was published in 2022 by Mishimasha.

Both authors are historians, but Ukraine is not their field of expertise. As a result, much of the book explains Ukraine from an outsider’s perspective, making their lectures feel approachable and easy to relate to for readers.

I believe the purpose of this book is to help our generation reconnect with the feelings of people in the past who, even if they were far from the battlefield, never saw war as someone else’s concern.

It is not easy to continuously empathise with the anger and sorrow of people affected by events in other countries. However, in the 21st century, as globalisation advances, the idea that ‘as long as my surroundings are peaceful, everything is fine’ will not hold forever, and its impact will inevitably reach us.

Let’s read and keep learning.

The History of Ukraine

It has been more than 30 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the image of Eastern European countries has become so well established that it is easy to mistakenly assume they have always existed. But in reality, Ukraine only declared its independence in 1991.

Through this book, we come to understand that Ukraine has had a particularly complex history.

The word ‘Ukraine’ originates from the time of the Kievan Rus and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where it initially referred to ‘borderland‘ or ‘frontier‘.

It also has the meaning of ‘region‘ or ‘country‘, which holds more significance for Ukrainians.



However, Poland and Russia continue to regard Ukraine as a ‘borderland’ in their perception.

Consequently, this area has traditionally been a place of clashes between various groups and powers, and it’s important to keep this in mind, as emphasised by Satoshi Koyama, who specialises in Polish history.

Geographically, the region is a vast plain, and since the 13th century, when the Mongol army arrived and destroyed the Kievan Rus, the area around the Dnipro River has been a site of clashes between major powers from the west, east, and south. It was during this time that a group called the Cossacks emerged, and the independent spirit of the Ukrainian people began to grow.



The area would continue to experience power struggles and was even dragged into the two World Wars, and after the Soviet Union collapsed, it seemed like peace had been restored — only to find itself once again trapped between Russia and Western forces.

Ultimately, Ukraine’s location appears to be a key factor that has led to its tumultuous historical fate.

The Path to Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion

In 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in southern Ukraine. Shortly afterwards, pro-Russian armed groups in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine rose up, leading to clashes with the Ukrainian government forces.

Putin takes advantage of historical events to justify the invasion.

For example, he claims that ‘Ukraine has always been part of Russia,’ pointing to the time when the Cossack state sought Moscow’s help in its struggle for independence from Poland. He also refers to Ukraine’s cooperation with Nazi Germany during World War II to escape Polish control, arguing that Russia’s military actions are aimed at the ‘de-Nazification’ of Ukraine.

Following the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, Ukraine moved to deepen its ties with the EU and NATO. Russia regarded this as ‘Western interference’ and began gathering military forces near the Ukrainian border in 2021. Ultimately, on February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a full-scale invasion.

Since then, the war has dragged on, resulting in many casualties within Ukraine, while support for the country has grown worldwide.

The Russia-Ukraine War Through the Lens of Food

The other author, Tatsushi Fujihara, approaches the Russia-Ukraine conflict through the lens of “food” and offers his insights on this matter.

Ukraine is home to one of the world’s most fertile “black soil regions” (chernozem), producing so much wheat and corn that it is often called “the breadbasket of Europe”.

However, the war has devastated farmland, blocked ports, and suspended exports, triggering a severe food crisis, especially in the Middle East and Africa.


Moreover, Russia has been obstructing Ukraine’s grain exports while leveraging its own wheat as a geopolitical tool, restricting exports to influence global markets.

In this way, this war is not just a military conflict but can also be seen as an invasion by Russia, a major agricultural power, into another agricultural powerhouse, Ukraine.

“Someone Else’s Problem”?

I think I read this book sometime last summer. Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it is terrifying to realise that, as I write this, three years have already passed since the war began.

As I was writing this article, I quickly went through the book again and was surprised to find that, even though it’s been less than half a year since I read it, the impact it had on me has already faded.

What the authors point out in the book—how people perceive war as something distant and unrelated—turned out to be true for me as well.

Towards the end of the book, there is a discussion section between the two authors in which they analyse the frequently used phrase on television, ‘This is not just someone else’s problem,’ exploring in what way this issue is truly relevant to us.

The authors stress that we should not simply see this war as a geopolitical struggle between NATO and Russia, but rather approach it from a more everyday perspective—one that recognises, on a basic human level, that such actions are morally unacceptable. In this sense, it is not just someone else’s problem.

When individuals begin to experience a certain level of comfort in their lives, the need to rely on others diminishes, and relationships with those around them tend to fade. As a result, they can go through their daily lives without much thought for the broader workings of society.



However, when we become indifferent to “distant events”, we may not notice how things unfold, and what was once someone else’s issue may one day strike our own peaceful lives.

As globalisation has advanced in the 21st century, it seems that everything happening between people around the world is no longer something we can consider “someone else’s issue”.

👉 「中学生から知りたいウクライナのこと」：初心者にもわかるウクライナ情勢

今回紹介する書籍は、2022年にミシマ社から出版された「中学生から知りたいウクライナのこと」。

著者の二人はどちらも歴史学者ですが、専門はウクライナではありません。そのため、ウクライナを外側からの視点で解説する部分も多く、読者としては親しみを感じながら彼らの講義を読むことができます。

この本が書かれた目的を一言で言えば、歴史を学ぶことを通して、戦場から離れたところにいても戦争が他人事ではなかった頃の人々の感情を、私たちの世代に呼び戻そうとするものだと思います。

他国で起きている出来事に対する人々の怒りや悲しみに共感し続けるのは簡単なことではありませんが、21世紀に入りグローバル化が進んだ今、自分の身の回りが平和ならそれでオッケーという感覚では、いつかその影響を避けられなくなる日が必ずやってきます。



読書して学んでいきましょう。

ウクライナの歴史

ソビエト崩壊からすでに30年以上が経ち、東ヨーロッパの国々のイメージがすっかり定着してしまったため、それらが昔から存在していたような錯覚に陥ってしまいますが、ウクライナが独立を宣言したのは1991年。

そのウクライナですが、この本を読むことで、歴史上かなり複雑な経験をしてきた国だということが理解できます。



ウクライナという国名の語源ですが、中世のキエフ大公国やポーランド・リトアニア共和国の時代、「ウクライナ」という言葉はもともと、


borderland「辺境地」
frontier「国境地帯」「辺境」


という意味を持っていました。一方で、


region「地方」
country「国」


という意味もあり、ウクライナ人にとっては後者のニュアンスが強いですが、ポーランドやロシアから見たウクライナはいまだに「辺境」としてのイメージが根強いようです。

よって、このエリアはもともと様々な集団や勢力が衝突し合う場所であり、そうした認識を持っておくべきだと、ポーランド史を専門とする小山哲さんも指摘しています。

地形的にも平原地帯で、13世紀にモンゴル軍がやってきてキエフ大公国を破って以来、ドニプロ川周辺では西から東から南から大国同士が衝突。そのなかでコサックというグループが現れ、ウクライナ民族としての独立的な精神が育っていきました。


その後もこのエリアは、西と東の大国による奪い合いを経験し、二度の世界大戦に巻き込まれるなど、休みなしの状態が続き、ソ連崩壊後にやっと落ち着いたかと思いきや、結局またロシアと西側勢力の狭間に巻き込まれることに…。



とにかくウクライナという国の位置が、歴史的に波乱に満ちた運命をたどる要因になってしまっているようです。

全面侵攻までの経過

2014年、ロシアはウクライナ南部のクリミア半島を併合しました。その後、ウクライナ東部のドンバス地域では親ロシア派武装勢力が蜂起し、ウクライナ政府軍との戦闘が始まってしまいます。



プーチンは歴史の一部を都合よく利用し、侵攻を正当化します。

例えば、かつてコサック国家がポーランドからの独立を目指しモスクワに助けを求めたことを理由に「もともとウクライナはロシアの一部」だったと主張。また、第二次大戦中にウクライナがポーランドの支配から逃れるためドイツと協力した事実を挙げ、ロシアの軍事行動の目的はウクライナの「非ナチ化」だと説明しました。



2014年のユーロマイダン革命の後、ウクライナ国内ではEUやNATOとの結びつきを強めるための動きが進んでいきます。そこで、この動きをロシアは「西側の干渉」と見なして、2021年からウクライナ国境付近に軍を集結。最終的に、2022年2月24日に全面侵攻を開始しするに至ったわけです。


以来、戦争は長期化し、ウクライナ国内では多くの犠牲者が出ると同時に、世界中で支援の声が上がっています。

「食料」という視点から見たロシア・ウクライナ戦争

もう一人の著者である藤原辰志さんは、ロシア・ウクライナ戦争を「食料」という視点から捉えて説明してくれます。

ウクライナは、世界有数の肥沃な「黒土地帯（チェルノーゼム地帯）」を持ち、そこでは「ヨーロッパの穀倉地帯」と呼ばれるほど小麦やとうもろこしが生産されています。

ところが、戦争によって農地をボロボロにされ、港が封鎖され、輸出ができなくなってしまったことで、中東やアフリカを中心に深刻な食料危機が発生してしまいました。

さらに、ロシアはウクライナの穀物輸出を妨害する一方で、自国の小麦を戦略的に利用し、食料を「武器」として使い、輸出を制限することで市場に圧力をかける戦略を取っています。

このように、この戦争は単なる軍事衝突ではなく、農業大国であるロシアが同じく農業大国であるウクライナに侵攻したとも言えます。

「他人事」?

僕がこの本を読んだのは去年の夏頃だったと思います。ロシアがウクライナに侵攻したのが2022年2月24日なので、恐ろしいことに、この記事を書いている今、戦争が始まってからもう3年が経ってしまっています。

この記事を書くに当たって、もう一度この本にサッと目を通したのですが、読んでからまだ半年も経っていないのに、当時の感動がすでに薄れていることに気づきました。

作者たちが本の中で指摘する「戦争を遠い国の出来事として捉えてしまう」という現象が、そのまま自分にも当てはまっていました。

本の終盤で、著者二人による対談のセクションがあるのですが、そこでテレビのコメントなどでよく耳にする「これは他人事ではありませんよね」というセリフの「他人事ではない」がどういう次元で他人事じゃないのか、ということが議論されています。

二人は、NATO対ロシアという大きな枠組みではなく、もっと日常的なレベルで「人間として、そんなことをやったらアカンやろ！」いう次元で「他人事じゃない」という感覚で考えないといけないと指摘しています。

個人の生活にある程度の余裕が出てくると、お互いに頼る必要がなくなり、周囲との関係が薄れがちになります。すると、社会の成り立ちを気にせず、毎日を過ごせてしまいます。

そんなふうに「どこか遠くの出来事」を気にしなくなった頃、知らぬ間に物事が進み、その「他人事」だったはずの出来事が、突然自分たちの平和な生活に襲いかかってくるのかもしれません。

21世紀に入り、グローバル化が進んだ今、世界で起こる同じ人間同士による出来事はすべて「他人事」ではなくなってきているように思います。

The book I’m introducing today, which I would directly translate into English as “Understanding Palestine: A Topic to Explore From Around Secondary School Age“, was published in late July 2024 by Mishimasha.

This book is authored by three experts: Professor Mari Oka from Waseda University’s Faculty of Letters, Professor Satoshi Koyama from Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Letters, and Associate Professor Tatsushi Fujihara from Kyoto University’s Institute for Research in Humanities.

I knew that Israel was established after World War II, but honestly, I never gave it much thought and just accepted it with a casual ‘Oh, I see’ attitude.

But when you think about it, before the establishment of Israel, the land wasn’t empty. Palestinians had lived there and have suffered displacement and persecution since the country’s founding. Yet, during the October 7, 2023 incident, where Palestinians fought back, the news mainly focused on the tragedy of Israelis, portraying Palestinians as the villains.

While uncovering historical truths, this book’s purpose is to question our unsettling tendency to feel sorry for a moment when witnessing tragedies, only to go back to our everyday lives as if nothing happened, as long as we aren’t directly impacted.

This is an incredibly insightful book, packed with learning opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to read it!

Why should you read this book?

Like I said before, until recently, I was also someone who could momentarily feel sympathy but quickly move on with my life if it wasn’t personally impacted.

Reading news and newspapers was simply a form of gathering information, and looking back, even that information-gathering was probably driven by the fear of seeming ignorant about current events.

It was after reading James O’Brien’s “How They Broke Britain”, published following Brexit, that I began engaging with politics and history in a fresh way. O’Brien, a well-known LBC radio host and journalist, opened my eyes, leaving me deeply frustrated with both the Conservative Party’s actions and my own ignorance.

Learning the truths behind political and historical events that I had never known before was a wake-up call. That shock became the motivation to understand my place in the world and reassess my connection with others. It marked the start of my “rehabilitation” from the tendency to briefly feel pity or outrage and then resume life as usual.

This remarkable book, which reveals truths likely to shock you in many ways, serves as a gateway for anyone suffering from this “illness” to begin their journey toward rehabilitation.

Through engaging in this process of rehabilitation, you’ll gain the ability to reflect on issues such as ‘human rights‘, ‘social inequality‘, and ‘environmental challenges‘ in relation to your own position, ultimately realizing how continuing your current unconscious behaviors could lead to your own suffering in the long run.

Moreover, the shocking details shared by Tatsuji Fujiwara about West Germany’s post-World War II dealings with Israel (West Germany continued to assist Israel in building a nuclear power plant for desert greening, even though they knew the funds were being redirected for the development of nuclear weapons ) will leave you stunned, thinking, “Seriously?” His unique approach of examining history through “food” is also a fresh perspective that we don’t often encounter in our day-to-day thinking.

イスラエルという国が、第２次世界大戦の後に建てられたことは知っていましたが、正直何も深く考えたことはなく、「ふ〜ん、そうか。」のレベルで納得していました。

でもよく考えたら国が建つ以前は、当然そこが更地であったワケはなく、元々そこに住んでいたパレスチナ人は建国以来、追いやられたり迫害されたりして苦しんできたわけで、でもってパレスチナ人が反抗に出た2023年の10月7日の事件では、イスラエル人の悲劇ばかりがニュースで取り上げられて、パレスチナ人が悪者扱いにされてしまっている。



歴史の真実を伝えると同時に、この本の目的は、悲惨な出来事を目にしても、自分の生活が脅かされない限り「かわいそう」と一瞬思うだけで、通常の生活に戻ることができてしまう私たちの危機的な心のあり方に問いを投げかけることにあります。

とにかく学べることが多い本です。是非とも手にとって読んでください。

この本を読む理由は？

先程、

自分の生活が脅かされない限り「かわいそう」と一瞬思うだけで、通常の生活に戻ることができてしまう

と書きましたが、最近までは自分もまさにそのうちの一人でした。


ニュースや新聞を読むのも、単なる情報収集で、振り返ってみると、その情報収集さえも「世間のことを知らないと恥ずかしいから」という理由でやってたような気がします。


政治や歴史に関して、自分が今までと違った角度で興味を持ち始めたのは、イギリスでブレクジット(EU離脱) が起こった後に出版された、LBCラジオ局の人気プレゼンターで、ジャーナリストの、ジェームズ・オブライエンさんによる著書 “How They Broke Britain“ を読んだ時。（保守党のやってきたことにも、自分の無知にも両方メチャメチャ腹立ちました。w）



結局、自分が今まで知らなかった政治活動や歴史の背景で起こっている真実を知った時のショックが、現在の自分の立ち位置を知りたいという原動力となって、自分と周りとの関係を見直すきっかけ、

つまり…

「自分の生活が脅かされない限り「かわいそう」「うわっ、ひでぇ！」と一瞬思った後、サラッと通常の生活に戻ることができてしまう」

という心の状態からのリハビリが始まるんだと思います。

いろんな意味であなたにショックを与えるであろう、この真実が書かれた素晴らしい本も、病気のあなたが、そんなリハビリ活動に入ることができる入り口の一つです。

そして、リハビリに取り組むことで「人権問題」や「世の中の不平等」、そして「環境問題」についても、自分の立場と照らし合わせて考えることができるようになり、自分が普段何気なくやっている行動を続けていく事が、最終的にどれだけ自分自身を苦しめることになるかを理解できるようになります。

専門分野の異なる3人が、パレスチナ問題について伝える。

この本の面白いところは、異なった分野を担当している歴史人文学者たちが「パレスチナ問題」という一つの課題について、それぞれの角度から熱く語っているところにあります。

世の中では毎日たくさんの出来事が起こり、膨大な情報が流れてくるため、私たち一般人が日々の生活の中で特定の分野にだけ集中するなんて正直無理がありますよね。



今となっては、イスラエルのネタニヤフ首相に対して、国際刑事裁判所 (ICC)から戦争犯罪の疑いで逮捕状が発行されているので、物事は明らかになってきていますが、例えば少し前までは、岡真里さんが書いている前半の部分、

イスラエル政府は十月七日以降のガザに対するジェノサイドを正当化するために、「ハマスが赤ん坊四〇人を殺して、うち十数人の首を切り落とした」とか、「赤ん坊をオーブンで焼いた」とか、「野外音楽祭で集団性暴力があった」と主張しますが、これらはすべて、遺体収容にあたった民間ボランティア団体のメンバーによる虚偽の証言であったことが判明しています。

…なんて情報は、アメリカを筆頭にイスラエル側についているヨーロッパの国々、またはその国々といい関係を保っていたい国に住んでいたら、その国の流すイスラエルびいきの情報に埋もれてしまいます。


「ハマスの残忍なテロ」→「パレスチナ人ってひどい！」になってしまいますよね。

「シオニズム」(英語発音は”ザイオニズム”) なんて言葉も、過去に歴史の授業で覚えて記憶の片隅に残っているかもしれませんが、この言葉をしっかり理解していなかったら、全てのユダヤ人が悪いヤツらだと誤解してしまいます。

さらに、藤原辰史さんが語る、第二次世界大戦後の西ドイツによるイスラエルへの対応 (西ドイツは、イスラエルの原子力発電所建設を砂漠の緑化を目的に支援していたが、その資金が核兵器開発に流用されていたことを知りながらも、援助を続けていた) についての内容は「うわっ、マジっすか？」レベルのショックですし、「食料」を通して歴史をたどる視点も、私たちの普段の考え方にはない発想でとても新鮮です。

また、専門分野がポーランドの小山哲さんが、「イスラエルにあるポーランドの本屋」でポーランド関連の書籍を購入したという個人的な体験から話が展開していくところにも、すごく興味を着火させられます。

3人の教授たちが、自分たちの研究の参考のために読んだ本が、章の終わりの[注]の部分にリストアップされているところも、親切でうれしいですね。

I often receive Japanese-related items from her, including books, so at first, I didn’t quite understand what she meant when she said,

“My friend in Japan has sent me too many of these, so…”

… but after three or four days, when I glanced at the cover of the book that had been left in the kitchen, the katakana characters for “Rebecca Salter” jumped out at me.

“Wow, seriously!?”


… She’s one of the authors of this book!!!

I had always sensed that Rebecca, who breezes through the Royal Academy’s building with a refreshing aura, was something else. However, when I found out that she was involved in the book about the enigmatic figure “Mita Heibonji“, who had been active since the Meiji era and was probably not well-known even among Japanese people, the mystery only deepened.

Therefore, in this article, I am introducing “Hibon no Hito“, a book about “Mita Heibonji” , which was published at the end of January 2024.

Mita Heibonji and the “Garakutashu” Sect

Led by Helena Čepková, a Czech professor at Ritsumeikan University, and with the cooperation of other contributing authors, the book attempts to uncover the true identity of Mita Heibonji (real name: Rinzo Mita), an eccentric figure who led a group called ‘Garakutashu‘ about 100 years ago.

Not knowing of his existence, I read at the beginning of the book that he was mentioned alongside Minakata Kumagusu, which led me to imagine him as a rather hot-tempered oddball…


However, after finishing the book, I found him to be a completely different type of eccentric.

Mr. Heibonji,

due to an accident in his childhood, completely lost his hearing at the age of 14 and had since only been able to communicate through writing.

“How the hell he managed to be at the heart of an international network in such a state?” is one of the mysteries surrounding him and one of the themes of this book.

His motto in life is to consider ‘ordinary’ as the ideal state, so even though he was exceptionally talented at painting, when his mentor Kobayashi Kiyochika suggested he submits his work to a museum, he chose to remain an amateur.


Furthermore, to become a member of the ‘Garakutashu,’ one simply needs to become a collector of any one thing, regardless of gender, nationality, or title, emphasizing equality for everyone.


Normally, the leader of an artistic movement holds power, but he’s a bit of a complicated person who has even abandoned that. (lol)

Now, the brilliant thing about this book is that…

while each author depicts the character of the protagonist, Mita Heibonji, and the position of ‘Garakutashu’ in Japan or the world, they naturally includes explanations about the social movements and trends of Japan at the time, as well as its relations with foreign countries. This makes it a valuable resource for readers to learn about history.

Especially in Chapter 3, it is delightful that Fusanosuke Natsume, the grandson of Heibonji and one of the authors of this book, explains various aspects of the era, such as the popularity of socialism and anarchism, the introduction of avant-garde art and more.

What is “theosophy”?

One thing that caught my attention while reading this book is the frequent mention of the word ‘Theosophy‘.


Theosophy is described as…

a religious philosophy established in the late 19th century, which includes teachings on the mysteries of the universe, spiritual evolution, and human spiritual growth. It asserts that all religions possess a common sacred truth, and therefore Theosophy is considered to be the source of the world’s religions.

And the reason why ‘Theosophy’ is frequently mentioned is that some of the foreign members associated with ‘Garakuta-shu’, who appear in the book, were affiliated with Theosophy.

In Chapter 6, Professor Reiji Ando of Tama Art University writes in detail about this ‘Theosophy’. Astonishingly, he states that the abstract expressions of Russian artists Malevich and Kandinsky were derived from Theosophy!

It is speculated that the reason why foreign members were interested in the Garakuta-shu is because the philosophies overlapped between the motto of ‘Garakuta-shu’, led by Heibonji Mita, and Theosophy.


It is written that ‘Tertium Organum,’ a book by the Russian mystic and philosopher Pyotr Demianovich Ouspensky, who was influenced by Theosophy, led Malevich to Suprematism.

So, I’m a bit curious… or rather, I really feel like reading it.

I would recommend this book for …?

If asked who I would recommend this book to, I would definitely recommend it to those currently engaged in artistic activities.

If you’re thinking of making a living from art, you can’t really separate it from business.

And in this day and age, with platforms like Instagram offering access to a wide range of artworks by various artists, it appears that many artists end up chasing trends, imitating them in pursuit of sales, and consequently, fade away when those trends lose popularity.


At the point where you start focusing on business, it becomes the exact opposite of what Mr. Heibonji was doing. However, in this age of abundant variety, I believe it’s extremely important to consider one’s own position.

And I feel like there are plenty of hints hidden in this book that could help with that.

👉 三田平凡寺を巡る「非凡の人」の物語：感動と啓発のメッセージ

レベッカさんからは本をはじめ、ときどき日本関係のものをいただくので、最初はレベッカさんの言っていた

「日本の友達が、すごい量のこれを送ってきてくれたので…」

の意味がよくわかりませんでした。

… が、３〜4日して、キッチンに置いてあったその本の表紙に目をやると、カタカナで「ソルター・レベッカ」の文字が飛び込んできた。

「え。マジで！？」


… 著者のうちの1人になってるやん!!!


飄々と、さわやかな風をジェネレイトしながら、ロイヤル・アカデミーの建物の中を行ったり来たりするレベッカさんが、只者ではない事は以前から感じていたが、この明治時代から活躍していた、日本人にもあまり知られていないであろう、謎多き人物「三田平凡寺」の本に関わっていると知った時には、さらに謎 x 謎である。


というわけで、今回の記事では、2024年の1月末に出版された「三田平凡寺」についた書かれた「非凡の人」を紹介しています。

三田平凡寺と「我楽他宗」

チェコ人で、立命館大学の教授である ヘレナ・チェプコヴァーさんが中心となり、この書籍に参加している他の著者たちからの協力を得て、正体を明らかにしようと努めた人物は、三田平凡寺（本名：三田林蔵）と呼ばれる、今から100年ほど前に「我楽他宗」たるものを率いたエキセントリックな人。

僕は、彼の存在自体を知らず、本のはじめの方で「南方熊楠と並べて紹介されている書物がある」と書かれていたので、かなり気性の荒い変人を思い描いていたのですが…


読み終えてみると、全く違うタイプの変人でした。

平凡寺さんは、

幼い頃の事故により、14歳で聴力を完全に失って以来、筆談でしかコミュニケーションが取れないという、ハンディーキャップの持ち主。

「一体そのような状態で、どのようにして国際ネットワーク集団の中心にいることができたのか？」というのが、彼を取り巻くミステリーの一つであり、この本のテーマのうちの一つでもあります。

彼は、人生理想の境地を「平凡」とすることをモットーとし、自分はメチャメチャ絵が上手いのに、師匠の小林清親に、作品を美術館に出品するように勧められても、アマチュアでいることを選び、さらには「我楽他宗」のメンバーになる条件としては、何か１つの物を集める収集家になるというだけで、男も女も、外国人も、肩書きも関係なく全ての人が平等。


通常、芸術運動のリーダーは権力者であるのに、それも放棄してしまっているという、ややこしい人です。（w）



さて、この本の素晴らしいところは…

それぞれの著者が、主人公である三田平凡寺の人物像や、日本、または世界における「我楽他宗」の位置を伝えようとする際に、当時の日本の社会の動きや風潮、そして海外諸国との関係についての説明が自然と伴うため、読者にとって歴史の勉強にもなる、というところ。

特に第3章では、平凡寺の孫であり、この本の著者の1人でもある夏目房之介さんが、当時の社会主義やアナーキズムの流行、前衛芸術の輸入など、時代背景を交えてながら、いろいろと説明してくれるところがうれしいですね。

神智学とは？

この本を読んでいて気になったのが、たびたび出てくる「神智学」(Theosophy) という言葉。

19世紀末に設立された宗教哲学で、宇宙の神秘、霊的進化、そして人間の霊的成長に関する教義を含み、すべての宗教が共通の神聖な真理を持っていると主張、よって神智学は世界の宗教の根源にあるものとみなされる。

… だそうです。

でもって、なぜこの「神智学」が頻繁に出てくるかというと、この本の中で登場する「我楽他宗」を出入りする外国人メンバーの何人かが、この神智学に所属していたという事実があるらしいのです。

この「神智学」については、多摩美術大学で教授をしている安藤礼二さんが、第6章で詳しく書いてくれていますが、なんと、ロシアの芸術家のマレーヴィッチやカンディンスキーによる抽象表現が、この「神智学」から生まれたとのこと!

…で、平凡寺さんが率いた「我楽他宗」のモットーが、神智学の哲学と重なる部分があったため、海外からのメンツが「我楽他宗」に興味を持ったのでは、という推測がなされています。

神智学の影響を受けた、ロシアの神秘思想家で哲学者の ピョートル・デミアノビッチ・ウスペンスキー って人が書いた「テルティウム・オルガヌム」という本が、マレーヴィッチを「スプレマチズム」に導いたと書かれているので、ちょっと、と言うか、かなり読んでみたいです。

誰にオススメ？

この本を、誰に勧めたいか？と言われたら、やっぱり現在アート活動をしている人達に勧めたいですね。


アートは、それで飯を食っていこうと思ったら、やっぱりビジネスと切り離すことはできない。


でもって今の時代、インスタグラムなどで、いろんなアーティストの作品を観覧することができるため、売れたいあまりにトレンドを追っかけて、真似に走り、結局そのトレンドが終わったら自分も消えてしまう、っていうパターンが結構あるような気がします。


ビジネスに走る時点で、平凡寺さんのやっていた事とは、すでに正反対の位置になってしまうわけですが、いろんな物が豊富に揃いすぎている今の時代こそ、自分の位置を考える事がすごく重要になってくると思います。


そして、この本には、そのヒントがたくさん隠されているような気がします。

I recommend Yoichi Ochiai’s this book which is titled as “Tactics to survive the super progressive age of A.I.” especially to those who are over 40 like me.


The reason for this is because, while the younger generation that has been at one with the speed of changing time over the last fifteen or so years and plan their future, I believe there are still lots of us in our generation having a passive attitude towards collecting information because the charm of the “Showa-era” in the last century is holding us back.

There is this famous book called “THE 100-YEAR LIFE” which was written by English authors Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott.


The theme of Yoichi Ochiai’s book is similar to this, however he goes into more details about…


“what we need to do specifically to survive the future of shifting age”


in his book.

To be honest, people like me who are thick-skinned to keep up with the flow of modern age will probably be shocked to know where we are currently standing.

However, the modern age has been shifting towards the direction where we need to have a sense of crisis and hunt for new information so that we won’t be left far behind in the future.

Read this book and it will give your face a good slap to wake you up. 

What is singularity?

The subtitle of this book is


“A list of 34 things to prepare for the singularity”


and having my ignorance revealed,

I didn’t even know the meaning of the “singularity” at all in the first place!

Hence, I had to begin with googling the word to know what it is…

After checking the word both in Japanese and in English and reading 2-3 articles about it with each language, I started feeling worried…

If I am to summarise the “singularity” from what I have read, it will be something like…



an “unprecedented super dramatic change”.

It’s called “gizyutsuteki-tokui-ten” (means “technological singular point) in Japanese, and it is said that… 

”its change is so dramatic that generation that has lived before the technological singular point cannot understand how the subsequent generations think because the way they think is totally out of its norm.”

The word “Singularity” has become popular since an American inventor called Ray Kurzweil who has been leading the field of studying AI (Artificial Intelligence) used it as a concept when he forecasted our coming future in 1980s.

It is anticipated that if the technological innovation continues like this, A.I. will be able to develop its ability by itself and we will not be able to catch up with its developing speed, and at the end of the day, their intelligence will have been outperforming ours (human’s). 

It looks like we will begin to see some visible changes in our society around the year of 2030, and by the year of 2045, our life will have been astoundingly different from the one we are presently leading.

It is also said that many jobs that we are currently engaged will have been operated by robots.

However, this is, of course, only prediction, therefore there is a counter-argument as well.

But even so, because the speed of technological development has been formidable since around the time where iPhone was released, the prediction sounds pretty much realistic, doesn’t it? 

With such a feeling of unease, I turned the front cover and what I had found was this…

We have no choice but to read this book! w

 How to survive the super progressive age of A.I.?

We cannot live against the stream of rapidly changing age of technology.

I guess “irreversible” is the word that really describes the situation…

The younger generations nowadays have lived their youth along with the recent development of technology, hence, I believe they have naturally integrated themselves into its speed, however, the older generations need to make some efforts to keep up with the constant updates of machinery.

(As for myself, I barely managed to buy a laptop computer for myself during the pandemic and set up my blog account…) w

Since the use of mobile phone has become widespread and the world has been connected by internet, we no longer can take work and private time separately.

The author calls this concept of taking work and private time inseparable in our society as “Work As Life”, and is addressing us to accept and adapt to its environment.

He is also encouraging us to use our private time to pursuit what we really like and create some value out of it so that it can be a source of our income in the coming days.

In other words, it’s better for us to make an effort to broaden some options so that some of them might have a possibility to lead you to another career in the future.

It is suggested that we need to spend our free time on something productive as well as enjoying ourselves rather than just consuming it by getting entertained.

As I go on reading his tactics to survive this modern age of evolving technology, people like me who are already being one or more laps behind might wonder if we will ever be able to make it…

But I was personally saved by this line.

“Waiting does not change your situation at all, and you shouldn’t be pessimistic about the fact that you don’t own any currently…”

Well, it sounds like there is still hope. ✨

This has made me feel like taking one step forward. w

He is also advising that…

”Not to pursuit originality if you are just starting but copy what other people are doing.”

I totally agree with what he is saying here because, initially, I was not interested in writing at all, but as I opened my Twitter account, I realised that almost everyone was blogging…


So, I started following and copying what other people are doing, while I still had this doubt that a person who don’t have much of knowledge about computing like me can really manage this?


But as I kept going, I started enjoying what I was doing, and my writing skill has developed little by little as I continued.

There are several “badly written” articles that I posted a year or so ago, and now I’m desperately trying to re-write them as quick as possible. W

…and eventually and somehow, I succeeded in familiarising myself with WordPress… and come to think of it, it was totally initiated by copying what others were doing.


You proceed with what you are doing in a matter-of-fact way, and at some point, if you think it has become something enjoyable for you, then I guess it’s become your thing.

Anyway, it looks like we better move on or we’ll find ourselves being stuck with where we are…

You will find lots of informative tips that will tell you what you should do specifically to survive the modern age in this chapter.

How to work in the super progressive age of A.I.?

Here, I have picked some of his insights into “how we should work in this super progressive age of A.I.”, here.

We should make full use of the company we work for

In this chapter, the author goes into further details about what was introduced in the book called “The 100-YEAR life”.

I was personally impressed by the way he expressed how our attitude towards the company we work for should be, which is written as “To make full use of the company” rather than the way it was described in “The 100-Years Life” as “Not to cling to the company”.

You are lucky if what you want to learn or the opportunity to brush up the skills you want to acquire is included in the company’s task, but if not, you better find your way to create time for yourself one way or another. 

Use tools as much as possible

He is warning us not let ourselves blindly rely on the spirit of doggedness to achieve things while there are alternative ways that can save our time, and is also advising us to keep this in our mind at any time.  

This is a heavy slap for the person like me who had been avoiding learning skills that could be useful for doing many things with our daily life and had been blindly dealing with things with cavemen’s way. w

I was not aware of the preciousness of time, and it has been cursing my life till today, hence I seriously need to improve this area…

And another thing is…

to make good use of SNS!

This is also something I started… only recently… w

Because social media, which have been replaced from the mass media such as newspapers and TV that are not interactive at all, have become the main source to get information nowadays, we need to deal with it personally, he explains. 

If you don’t post information voluntarily, you can’t create relationships with others, and this means you won’t be connected to the place of job opportunities…

Hence, we better let others know who we are and what we do. 


And by doing so, we can ride the wave of “The age of small business”.

Have an interest in politics

He also mentions that because we are moving onto the age of individuals, if we don’t check political matters actively, we might end up putting ourselves in a life-threatening situation.

Well, I guess this is true.

And he even states here that politics will be conducted by computers to some degree in the future.

If you are going to do something as an individual, then you need to check and understand the legal side of your activity.

In other words, you need to be aware of what is going on around you and protect yourself.

Find your niche

It’s often said that you need to be a specialist in a certain genre if you want to be recognised, however, if the genre is a popular one, it will be fairly difficult to become No.1 out of so many rivals.

“So, what can we do?”

Here, the author puts a great emphasis on finding a niche to make it.

The similar thing is often said when it comes to blogging or tweeting, which is …to narrow down your target instead of writing for everyone, or your article won’t be read by anyone.

Anyway, there are still lots more of the author’s amazing thoughts written in this chapter.

But the key point is, I believe, to grab whatever is available around you and let the world know about yourself by posting every day.

As for the chapter three, what is written here is mainly about how to look after yourself mentally and physically as you carry out the lifestyle of what is being suggested in chapter one and two, therefore, I’m not going to touch the subject here since this is something you will need to know some time later on.

Finally, whether you believe the event of the “singularity” is happening in 2045 or not, it is pretty obvious that maintaining the status quo can be a risky choice since the time is changing with formidable speed.

The content of this book will be a great inspiration for whoever has made a decision to move on.

理由はというと、ここ15年ぐらいの時代の移り変わりとそのスピードを、今を生きる若い人たちは直接肌で感じながら自分の将来を計画しているのに対し、僕らのような世代には、体の中に残っている昭和の血に邪魔されて、情報に対する姿勢がまだまだ受け身の人がたくさん存在していると思うからです。

イギリスの著者であるリンダ・グラットンさんとアンドリュー・スコットさんによる書籍で “THE 100-YEAR LIFE” ってタイトルの有名な本がありますが、この本の内容とほぼ同じテーマを、落合陽一さんは自作の本でさらに詳しく掘り下げて、


「これからの時代を生き抜くのに、私たちは具体的に何をやっていけば良いか？」


ってことをわかりやすく説明してくれています。

正直、僕のように時代の動きに鈍感な人が読んだら、自分の現在位置を再認識させられ、危機感をおぼえる事になるかもしれません。

しかしながら現実は、危機感を感じつつ情報に食らい付いていかなければ、自分がどんどん埋もれていってしまう時代に移り変わってきています。

この本を読んで、今のうちにパシッと平手打ちをくらって目を覚ましてもらいましょう。

シンギュラリティーって何だ？

この本のサブタイトルは


「シンギュラリティに備える34のリスト」


となっているのですが、いきなり自分の無知をさらけ出してしまいますと、

まずはじめに、この「シンギュラリティ」って意味、知りませんでした！

… と言うわけで、実際に本を読む前に、これってどういう意味なんやろ？って所から始まり、とりあえず Googleで日本語と英語の両方で検索。


2-3ヴァージョンずつ読み通してみたところ、こいつはヤベェーって事に…

とりあえず「シンギュラリティ」とは何か？ってのを簡単に説明するなら、


「前代未聞の超劇的な変化」


とでも申しましょうか。




日本語では「技術的特異点」と呼ばれ、どれくらい劇的かと言えば、

”変化が起こる前のジェネレーションは、変化後の新しいジェネレーションの考え方を、次元が違いすぎて全く理解できない”

というレヴェルになります。



「シンギュラリティ」という言葉が有名になったのは、もともと A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) の研究を引率してきているレイ・カーツワイル (Ray Kurzweil) っていうアメリカの発明家が、1980年代に未来を予測した時の概念として使ったことがきっかけ。

このまま技術革新が続けば、A.I.は自分で自分をdevelopさせることができるようになって、そのスピードに人間はやがて追いつけなくなり、最終的には人間の思考能力をはるかに上回る状態になっているとの予想がされています。

2030年あたりからボチボチ社会に変化が見られはじめ、2045年を迎える頃には、今の私たちが送っている生活とは劇的に違うものとなっている模様。

現在私たちがたずさわっている仕事の多くも、ロボットに取って代わられているとのことです。

もちろんコレはあくまでも予想なので、「シンギュラリティーなんぞ来やせん！」という意見もあります。

とは言え、どちらにしてもiPhoneが出てきたあたりからのテクノロジーの発展のスピードは半端じゃないので、正直なところ焦りますよね。

そんな気持ちでペラっと表紙をめくると、裏に　


“未来への漠然とした不安
「何をしたらいいかわからない」
という人間たちへ。” 


という優しい言葉がこっそりと綴られている。

「陽一兄さん。。。」

もうコレは読むしかないです。w

超AI時代の「生き方」

「私たちは急速に発達するテクノロジーの時代をさかのぼって生きることはできない。」


英語で言えば “irreversible” って言葉がピッタリと当てはまりますかね。

今の若い人たちは、テクノロジーの発展と共に人生を歩んできているので、ごく自然に機会と共存できているとは思いますが、僕のような世代の人間は、機械と共存していくことに対して、ある程度の努力が必要とされます。


（とりあえずパンデミック中にラップトップを購入し、かろうじてブログを開設なんてことをしちゃってますが…）w

モバイルフォンが普及して、インターネットで世界とつながっているから、仕事とプライベートを分けて考えることはもう不可能。

落合さんは、現代社会の仕事とプライベートが混在するこの概念を「ワーク “アズ” ライフ」と称しており、ワークとライフを切り分けられない環境を受け入れて適応せよ、と呼びかけています。



そして、

プライベートの時間は自分の好きなことを追求して、そこから何か価値を生み出し、万が一の時のために、ここからも収入源を作っていこうぜ！

というように、将来的に仕事になる可能性があるところのオプションを広げていこうってわけです。



余暇を消費するだけの遊び方ではなく、生産性のある遊び方をして楽しんでいきましょう、ってことですね。

こんな感じで落合さんの頭の中にある、テクノロジーがどんどん進化していく現代をどう生きるか？ってことをを読み進めていくと、すでに周回遅れの自分は今からでも間に合うんか？ ってな感じで正直ちょっと不安になったりもしましたが、

「待っていても状況は変わらないし、逆に今持たないことを悲観することもない。」

ってな文章に救われました。


…なんとも希望の光を照らしてくれるではありませんか。✨


「俺たちはまだ手遅れじゃない、とりあえず動いていこうぜ。」ってな感じで、一歩が踏み出せそうです。w



でもって、何から始めていいか分からない人達のために、


「オリジナリティなど追求せず、まずは他人の猿マネでよい。」


なんてアドヴァイスもあります。



これはまさにその通りで、僕はもともと文章を書くことに全く興味がなかったのですが、ツイッターを開設してみると、みんながブログをやっている。

そこで、僕のようなコンピューター初心者のオッサンにもできるのか？と疑問を持ちながらも、見よう見まねで始めていったら、次第に楽しくなってきて、文章力も少しずつではありますが、マシになってきました。

ヘタクソで人に見られたらヤバい初期の記事がたくさんあるので、必死こいてリライトの作業してます。💦

で、実際にやっていくうちに、知らぬ間にワードプレスのやり方が分かってきたりして、よくよく考えてみると完全に他人の猿マネから始まっています。

周りを気にせず淡々と進めていくうちに、楽しくなってくるようであれば、”シメタモノ”って感じですかね？

とりあえず今動いていかないと、あとがヤバいくなりそうです。

時間を無駄にせず、今の時代こんなふうに考えて生きていくべきですよ、という感じで理解しておくと自分が動きやすくなる「道しるべ的なこと」が、ここにはたくさん書かれています。

超AI時代の「働き方」

ここでは第二章の、超AI時代の「働き方」に関して気になったところをつまんでいきます。

会社を使い倒した方がいい

この章では、具体的に何をすべきかが書かれていて「100-YEAR-LIFE」にも書かれていたことが、さらに強く書かれている。

「会社にしがみつかない方がいい」ではなく、「会社を使い倒した方がいい」というように表現されているところに、個人的にはすごく動かされました。

会社の仕事の内容に、自分のやりたいこと、自分の技術が磨ける要素があるのであればラッキーだけど、そうじゃないとしたら、どこでうまくサボって、自分のための時間を作るかってところですね。

なるべくツールを使う

「そんなことをやって何の意味があるんだ？」という根性論には敏感になって、それを徹底してなくしていったほうがいい、ってことが書かれています。

これは、日常のいろんな面で役に立つであろうスキルを学ぶことを避けつつ、原始的な作業を続けてきた自分にはかなり「グサリ」と突き刺さりました。w


時間の大切さがが分かっていなかった事が、後々になって今の生活にひびいてきているので、今から少しずつでも改善していかなくてはいけません。

それともう１つは、SNSの活用ですね。

これも自分が本格的に手をつけ始めたのは、かなり最近のこと。w

新聞やテレビなどの一方通行のマスメディアに代わって、今の時代は、ソーシャルメディアが主流となったため、私たちはメディアの事を自ら意識していかなくてはなりません。

自分から発信していかないと、人との関係を作ることができないので、ここをやっていかないと仕事につながっていかない、ということになります。

じゃあどうしたらよいか？ってことで、落合さんはニッチの中でトップになれる方法を探せと本の中で強調しています。

これは、よくブログやツイッターの世界でも発信相手のターゲットをしぼれ、みんなに対して書いていたら誰もあなたに興味を持たない、って言われている部分と似ていますかね。

とまぁ、まだ色々とありますが、とりあえずはコンピューターを含め、利用できるものは利用しながら自分を世界に向けて日々発信していくことが、カギとなると思います。

第三章に関しては、どちらかと言えば、第一章と第二章の生活習慣にシフトしていった場合の精神的、肉体的な部分のメインテナンス的な事が書かれているので、この辺は行動してからの話という事でここでは触れません。

シンギュラリティを信じるにせよ、そうでないにせよ、時代が恐ろしいスピードで変化していることは確かなので、現状維持が危険なのは明らかですよね。
