<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hi! It’s konkaz (<a rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/konkazuk"><strong>@konkazuk</strong></a>).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently, I dropped by a Q&amp;A event in Dalston organised by the Green Party for leaseholders facing various problems.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’d heard the term&nbsp;<em>leaseholder</em>&nbsp;before, but if I’m being honest, I didn’t fully understand it until I attended the event. <br><br>(I’d always assumed that anyone paying rent for a flat was a leaseholder.)<br><br><br>So this article is a chance to understand what’s happening in my local area, as well as a report on an event I attended partly to educate myself, despite the fact that I turned up pretending I knew more than I actually did.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

  <div id="toc" class="toc tnt-none toc-center tnt-none border-element"><input type="checkbox" class="toc-checkbox" id="toc-checkbox-1"><label class="toc-title" for="toc-checkbox-1">目次</label>
    <div class="toc-content">
    <ul class="toc-list open"><li><a href="#toc1" tabindex="0">What is a leaseholder?</a></li><li><a href="#toc2" tabindex="0">The reality of leaseholders revealed at a Dalston Q&amp;A</a></li><li><a href="#toc3" tabindex="0">Thoughts after taking part</a></li></ul>
    </div>
  </div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc1">What is a leaseholder?</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22170" style="aspect-ratio:1.5555795614129848;width:492px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by MinimumViablePhotographer</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To begin with, because it is common in Japan to own both the land and the building outright, the idea of&nbsp;<em>leasehold</em>&nbsp;is not something many people are familiar with.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the UK, by contrast, it’s perfectly normal for flats to be leasehold, and for native speakers this is more or less common knowledge. So I initially assumed that because I rent a flat and pay rent, I must be a leaseholder as well.&nbsp;<br><br><br>That assumption, however, turned out to be completely wrong.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Unlike <strong>tenants</strong> like me who renew their contracts annually, a&nbsp;<strong>leaseholder</strong>&nbsp;is&#8230; </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">someone who has purchased a flat but does not fully own it. They hold long-term rights, often for 99, 125, or even 999 years, while a separate freeholder owns the land and the building itself.</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>Therefore, while people known as leaseholders may appear to own their homes, in reality they must continue to pay <strong>ground rent</strong> and <strong>service charges</strong> to the freeholder.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc2">The reality of leaseholders revealed at a Dalston Q&amp;A</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22164" style="aspect-ratio:1.5556208958149564;width:460px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">From right to left: Rachel, Zoë, and Alastair, from Hackney Green Party</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the time I arrived at the <strong>Hackney Community Centre</strong> in Dalston, the usual faces from the Green Party were in the middle of setting up. Antoinette, who was hosting the event, was in conversation with the professionals who would later be answering questions from the audience.<br><br><br>In no time at all, people poured in and the venue was suddenly packed. And just like that, the event kicked off.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first speaker was Amber, who had managed to navigate a difficult situation: despite the front door of her leased flat being left broken for a whole year, her service charges had doubled over two years, leaving her worried that she might not be able to find a buyer when she eventually moves out.<br><br>She shared her know-how based on her experience of taking over the management rights from the freeholder by using the <strong><a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/right-to-manage-a-guide-for-landlords">Right to Manage</a></strong>.<br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next up was Ian from&nbsp;<strong><a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://anthonygold.co.uk">Anthony Gold Solicitors</a></strong>.<br><br>He also explained another option called &#8220;Collective Enfranchisement,&#8221; where leaseholders come together to purchase the freehold. This is at the same valuation level as the Right to Manage from the freeholder, but it’s very powerful since it gives them complete control over the property.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He also spoke about the new &#8220;Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024&#8221;, which is still under consideration, explaining that the government might strengthen lease extension rights in the future and highlighting key points to keep in mind when taking service charge disputes to the First-tier Tribunal.<br><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="450" height="700" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22159" style="aspect-ratio:0.6428830321545074;width:262px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder.jpg 450w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder-193x300.jpg 193w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>The final speaker was Martin from the <strong><a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.leaseholdknowledge.com">Leasehold Knowledge Partnership</a></strong>.<br><br><br>He went on to explain the details of the &#8220;Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024&#8221; in greater depth.<br><br><br>Previously, even when leaseholders won their case at the First-tier Tribunal, they could not recover their legal fees. On top of that, freeholders were often able to add their own legal costs to the service charge, leaving leaseholders at a clear disadvantage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the 2024 Act, however, freeholders will face limits on their ability to pass on legal costs. As a result, leaseholders may in future be able to recover their costs if they win their case.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was struck by the emphasis on the fact that, in tribunal cases, you have to prove that your evidence is more reliable than the other side’s. This is why <strong>it is vital to keep collecting evidence on a day-to-day basis</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Freeholders often argue that they are professionals who are doing things properly, and that leaseholders are just overreacting because they do not fully understand complicated matters. Because tribunals sometimes accept these arguments, having strong evidence can make all the difference.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After that, the discussion moved into a Q&amp;A session.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">Thoughts after taking part</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22173" style="aspect-ratio:1.5555898861939337;width:458px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This event was organised primarily by Rachel, who is standing as a candidate in the ward elections this May in Dalston, together with Zoe, a sitting councillor. A large number of people attended, and the event was a great success.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Holding a free event like this for local residents and bringing in professionals to offer support can make a real difference for people who are struggling. It also highlighted the way Green Party members tend to act from the perspective of residents, rather than simply promoting their party.<br><br><br>If both of them are elected as councillors for Dalston, it would be a major gain for the local community.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until next time,<br><br>konkaz</p>

</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22170" style="aspect-ratio:1.5556161098697476;width:478px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/MinimumViablePhotographer-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by MinimumViablePhotographer</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22164" style="width:448px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/c801b9fd0e99b0e97046d77027c06d39-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">右からHackney Green PartyのRachelさん、Zoëさん、奥がAlastairさん。</figcaption></figure>

<br><br>彼女は、<a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/right-to-manage-a-guide-for-landlords"><strong>Right to Manage</strong></a>を利用して、freeholder からマネージメントの権利をtake over した際の経験から、そのノウハウを語ってくれました。<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>続いては、<a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://anthonygold.co.uk"><strong>Anthony Gold Solicitors</strong></a> からイアンさん。 <br><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="450" height="700" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22159" style="aspect-ratio:0.6428742843429669;width:252px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder.jpg 450w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/lease-holder-193x300.jpg 193w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>最後は、<strong><a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.leaseholdknowledge.com">Leasehold Knowledge Partnership</a></strong> のマーティンさん。

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22173" style="width:446px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/dalston-zoe-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>The other day, I attended a film event organised by the local environmental group <strong><a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.sustainablehackney.org.uk/about">Sustainable Hackney</a></strong>, held at St. Paul’s Church in Stoke Newington.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes Sustainable Hackney’s film events so engaging is that they don’t just screen films about social and environmental issues — they also invite guest speakers involved in those themes and hold panel discussions after the screenings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this article, I will reflect on &#8220;<strong>The Line We Crossed</strong>&#8221; and give a brief report on the event itself.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8216;The Line We Crossed&#8217; is a powerful documentary about how the right to protest is being increasingly restricted — not just in the UK, but across the globe.<br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Released in June 2025, this film directed by Liz Smith highlights how rising global temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels have reached a level that threatens human survival, following the struggles of those who continue to fight despite government oppression.</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><em>Just Stop Oil</em> activists keep speaking out to a public that seems worryingly unmoved by the crisis ahead. Even though their protests are entirely non-violent, they’re met with arrests, charges, and even detention. <br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Through this process, the film reveals how the very foundation of democracy — freedom of expression — is being increasingly undermined</strong>.<br><br><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc2">Freedom of speech and the right to protest are under threat!</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-21585" style="width:498px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by Noe Nei</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lately in the UK, more and more people have been arrested simply for standing with Palestine. <br><br><br>&#8230; <strong>And these aren’t violent activists — they’re ordinary people, peacefully speaking out for justice!</strong><br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">It is deeply concerning that we are reaching a point where even those who feel compelled to speak out against the appalling human rights violations unfolding in Palestine are being silenced. This represents a very dangerous state of affairs for any society.</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>Of course, the kind of direct action taken by &#8220;Just Stop Oil&#8221; — blocking roads and disrupting traffic — is a bit different from the pro-Palestine protests, so it’s understandable that opinions on them may vary.<br><br></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Still, in both cases, people speaking up for the future and for human rights are being pushed down by laws and institutions meant to control them.</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><strong>If we ignore these warning signs and do nothing, laws and regulations that serve the interests of those in power may quietly be created one after another—and by the time we realise it, our freedom and human rights could already be gone.</strong><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Freedom is just like health — you only realise its true value once it’s gone. That’s why it’s so important to remind people that we must protect it <em>now</em>, before it’s too late.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">What can we do?</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/just-stop-oil.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-21590" style="width:544px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/just-stop-oil.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/just-stop-oil-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">From left: Sam, Rosa, and Cathy</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the event, I was genuinely surprised to see that some of the people featured in the film were right there on stage for the panel after the screening.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When people hear the name <em>Just Stop Oil</em>, they probably think of the incident at the National Gallery, where activists threw soup at Van Gogh’s <em>Sunflowers</em> — by the way, the repair cost was said to be just £150! Because of that, I imagine many still see them as a rather “radical” group.<br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">However, after watching the film and listening to the people who joined the panel, I strongly felt that they’re actually just ordinary people — people like you and me.</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>That’s exactly why it makes me stop and think.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>In a capitalist society, those who speak the truth are often treated as troublemakers, while those in power use the media to portray them as “villains,” keeping the public from seeing what’s really going on.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><strong>And yet, they keep fighting — believing that one day, we’ll finally wake up and listen to their message.</strong><br><br><br><br>So the question is, for those of us living in the same society, what can we do when faced with this reality?<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Not everyone needs to sit on the road or stage protests in art galleries.<br><br>But we’ve already reached a point where we can’t just dismiss these issues as “nothing to do with me”. It’s time to start thinking seriously about them in our everyday lives.<br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Feeling moved by a film or a book is not enough — nothing will change if it ends there.</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>What really matters is how we turn that feeling into action.<br><br><br><br><strong>Even the smallest step can start to move society forward…!!!</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So that’s it for today’s post.<br><br><br><br>Thanks for reading and catch you again soon.<br><br>konkaz</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>どうも。コンカズ (<a rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/konkazuk"><strong>@konkazuk</strong></a>) と申します。

<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc1">「<strong>THE LINE WE CROSSED</strong>」はどんな映画？</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/fd1be1cea56e2faf103a6211a85b0e25.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-21583" style="width:514px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/fd1be1cea56e2faf103a6211a85b0e25.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/fd1be1cea56e2faf103a6211a85b0e25-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;THE LINE WE CROSSED&#8221;

</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="450" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-21585" style="width:494px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei.jpg 700w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Noe-Nei-300x193.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by Noe Nei</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><br>もちろん、今回の映画 &#8220;THE LINE WE CROSSED&#8221; の主役である &#8220;Just Stop Oil&#8221; のように交通を遮る直接行動は、パレスチナ抗議とは少々性質が異なるため、賛否があるかもしれません。<br><br></p>

</strong><br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br></p>

</span></h2>

<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>This talk was held as part of the promotion for George’s book <em><strong>The Invisible Doctrine</strong></em>, which was released about a year ago and is now coming out in paperback from Penguin Books.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Just like the previous event featuring <a rel="follow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.konkaz.com/gary-stevenson-hackney-english/">Gary Stevenson</a>, this talk was hosted by <a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://howtoacademy.com/events-calendar/">How to Academy</a>. However, this time, I felt the crowd had a slightly different energy.<br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Gary&#8217;s event, there were a lot of relatively young men and women interested in economics, mostly giving off the impression of being hardworking professionals. On the other hand, at George&#8217;s event, the crowd seemed slightly older and appeared to have a bit more ease in their lives.<br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">I imagine that Gary is striving to improve the world from the economic side, while George is doing the same from the environmental side. In between, there&#8217;s the political system issue that needs to be tackled, so to speak.</h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>I had listened to the audiobook of &#8220;THE INVISIBLE DOCTRINE&#8221; about 10 months ago, so I was familiar with most of the content. <br><br><br>I remember that it gave an excellent and easy-to-understand explanation of capitalism and the term &#8220;<strong>Neoliberalism</strong>&#8220;.<br><br></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">To sum up, in the early 1980s, under the Conservative government led by Prime Minister Thatcher and U.S. President Reagan, the switch to &#8220;free-market economics&#8221; was activated, including deregulation, privatisation of public services, and cuts to social welfare. <br><br>As a result, the gap between those left behind and those who profited from the competitive society steadily widened, and even the Labour Party, originally intended to support the working class, shifted to the right, leading to the current dire situation.</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><br>Since it was first proposed by Austrian economists in the 1930s, the ideology of neoliberalism has been propagated by the wealthy, think tanks (which George refers to as &#8216;junk tanks&#8217;), the media, and politicians, planting the notion in society that individuals should be seen not as &#8216;citizens&#8217; but as &#8216;consumers&#8217;.<br><br><br></p>

<div class="wp-block-cocoon-blocks-balloon-ex-box-1 speech-wrap sb-id-17 sbs-stn sbp-r sbis-cn cf block-box"><div class="speech-person"><figure class="speech-icon"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/bubble-0002.jpg" alt="" class="speech-icon-image"/></figure><div class="speech-name"></div></div><div class="speech-balloon">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fundamental attitude is one of constant taking—take, take, take—and when that becomes empty, they simply move on to the next. This approach worsens many contemporary crises, such as economic inequality, the deterioration of public services, and environmental destruction.</p>
</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>George also pointed out that neoliberalism has transformed political and social systems to benefit &#8220;the wealthy&#8221;. <br><br><br>Through lobbying activities, large corporations and others influence the government, causing democracy to become something increasingly shaped by the interests of a small group with money and power.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Consequently, the general public begins to feel that &#8216;their voices are no longer being heard&#8217; and that &#8216;politics no longer works for them&#8217;. Such feelings of hopelessness and discontent are then manipulated by leaders who seek to gain strong control by claiming, &#8216;I will change the nation!&#8217;<br></p>

<br><br><br><br>前回の<a rel="follow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://www.konkaz.com/gary-stevenson-hackney/">ゲイリー・スティーブンソン</a>さんの時と同様、<a rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" href="https://howtoacademy.com/events-calendar/">How to Academy</a> が主催するイベントでしたが、今回はゲイリーさんの時と比べて少し客層の違いを感じました。<br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>&#8220;THE INVISIBLE DOCTRINE&#8221;

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc3">まとめ</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="510" height="355" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/warren.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20627" style="width:484px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/warren.jpg 510w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/warren-300x209.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by warren</figcaption></figure>

</strong><br><br><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc1">12:00 PM: Gathering at Green Park</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="425" height="299" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-01.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20395" style="width:459px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-01.jpg 425w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-01-300x211.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The meeting time was set for 12:00 PM. I picked up my pace as I walked up the stairs of Green Park Tube Station and stepped out onto the street, where a massive crowd had already gathered.<br><br><br>The scale of the protest was truly impressive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>There were various types of placards available along the pavement, allowing participants to choose one that suited their personal preferences or size. <br><br><br><br><br>Of course, many people brought their own hand-made signs, and here&#8217;s what mine looked like.<br><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="482" height="345" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-02.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20396" style="width:402px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-02.jpg 482w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-02-300x215.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>During the waiting time before departure, I was approached by many different people, including students raising funds for local Palestine liberation events, individuals handing out free newspapers and pamphlets, others posing for social media photos, and even homeless people taking advantage of the moment to ask for contributions.<br><br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though there were also people in a more festive spirit, what I feel is most important in events like these is&#8230;</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>showing that many people are aware of the situation in Palestine and voicing their concerns.</strong></h5>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br>In order to create a strong impact, gathering as many people as possible is crucial.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><br>Now, there are items that Palestinian protesters carry that might make you ask, &#8216;What do these represent?&#8217; So, let’s take a moment to look at some of these symbolic items.<br></p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">🔹The key</h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The establishment of Israel in 1948 and the Third Middle Eastern War forced many Palestinians to be displaced from their homeland. For them, the &#8220;<strong>key</strong>&#8221; symbolises their strong desire to one day return to their lost homes, serving as a symbol for Palestinian refugees&#8217; demand for &#8220;<strong>the right of return</strong>&#8220;.<br></p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">🔹The keffiyeh</h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>keffiyeh</strong> [kəfiːjə] is a traditional Palestinian scarf with a black-and-white checkered pattern, and many people may associate it with the image of Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), who wore it on his head. Therefore, the &#8220;keffiyeh&#8221; is widely recognised as a symbol of Palestinian &#8220;<strong>ethnic identity</strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>resistance</strong>&#8220;.<br></p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">🔹Watermelon</h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Israeli occupation, the use of the Palestinian flag was sometimes banned. In response, people began <strong>using the watermelon as a substitute</strong>. <strong>Since its colors</strong> — <strong>red, green, black, and white</strong> — <strong>match those of the Palestinian flag</strong>, it became a symbol of resistance.<br></p>

<h6 class="wp-block-heading">🔹Olive tree</h6>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Palestine is <strong>the native land of olives, with a history spanning thousands of years</strong>. For generations, olive groves have been an integral part of Palestinian life, but they have been repeatedly destroyed due to Israel&#8217;s settlement expansion. As a result, the olive tree has become <strong>a symbol of the Palestinian people&#8217;s deep connection to their land</strong>.<br><br><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc2">Marching Through London: From Piccadilly to Whitehall</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="454" height="308" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20398" style="width:442px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03.jpg 454w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03-300x204.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After waiting for about an hour, the protest march finally began. <br><br><br>When I glanced behind me, I was surprised to see that the crowd had grown so large that it now stretched all the way towards Hyde Park.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>As the march proceeded down Piccadilly, it eventually passed right in front of my workplace. As expected, some of my colleagues were stationed at the gate, keeping watch for security reasons.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><br><strong>&#8230;What I hadn’t expected was what I saw as we passed the square and approached Leicester Square.</strong> <br><br><br><br>Beyond the countless Palestinian flags and placards waving in the wind, a group holding Israeli flags came into view.<br><br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="425" height="276" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20400" style="width:429px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04-.jpg 425w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04--300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>They hid their faces behind Batman masks, stood in a line facing us, smirking and dancing in a provocative manner to the beat of the music.<br><br></p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">There were some people holding cards with the message, &#8216;Trump’s victory, and you’re losers!&#8217; and it seemed like they came specifically to provoke during the protest.

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="454" height="308" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20398" style="width:484px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03.jpg 454w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-03-300x204.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px" /></figure>

<br></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="425" height="276" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20400" style="width:437px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04-.jpg 425w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-04--300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="482" height="343" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-05-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20402" style="width:468px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-05-.jpg 482w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-05--300x213.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px" /></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Judaism rejects Zionism.</strong><br>「ユダヤ教はシオニズムを拒否する。」<br><br><strong>State of &#8220;Israel&#8221; does not represent world&#8217;s Jewry.</strong><br>「イスラエルという国家は、世界中のユダヤ人を代表するものではない。」</h4>

</strong><br><br><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span id="toc4">まとめ</span></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="427" src="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-06.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-20405" style="width:454px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-06.jpg 640w, https://www.konkaz.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/palestine-demo-06-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">image by hostysalah</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>On February 21, as Ben Jamal was scheduled to appear for pre-trial procedures, many gathered outside the magistrates&#8217; court in Marylebone early in the morning to protest his prosecution, oppose the police’s repressive tactics, and defend the democratic right to protest.</p>
