Anyway, have you ever heard the word “Zamrock“?

Some people might find it hard to associate an image of Africa with rock music, however, from the mid-1970s to 1980s, there was a vibrant rock scene in Zambia, a country located in southern Africa.

With Witch (one of my colleagues from Zambia said he knew one of the band members) at the forefront, there were fabulous rock bands like Ngozi Family and Amanaz emerged during that time, making their mark in the music scene.

I’m sure there are quite a few people whose musical taste covers the style of what they do…?

So, this time I’ll introduce three recommended albums from the band called “Ngozi Family” which I got really hooked on for a while.

Day Of Judgement

The first one I would like to recommend is the album called “Day Of Judgement“, but before going through the musical aspects of this album, let me just briefly note the historical context of the time when this album was released.

This album was released in 1975, a year when “punk rock” was blossoming in London and New York.

On the other hand, during this period, significant events were happening in Africa.

In neighboring countries of Zambia at the time, Angola to the west and Mozambique to the east, independence was achieved from Portuguese colonial rule after prolonged conflicts.

And in South Africa, black communities were suffering under the oppressive system of apartheid imposed by the white society.

Zambia achieved independence from British colonial rule in 1964, however, it was facing tensions with its southern neighbor, Southern Rhodesia (later known as Zimbabwe).

In such circumstances, Zambia’s few rock musicians seemed to be influenced by “UK rock music scene” with bands like Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, Cream, and others, because of the country’s history as a former British colony.

The band leader “Paul Ngozi” (pronounced “Ngōzī” according to my colleague) had a great admiration for the band Ten Years After and it is said that before renaming his own band as “Ngozi Family,” he initially performed under the name of “Ten Years Before” as a tribute to them.

Now, getting back to the main topic, let’s talk about the album “Day Of Judgement“.


The recording lineup for this album consisted of…

Paul Ngozi : on vocals and lead guitar
Chrissy Zebby Tempo : on drums
Tommy Mwale : on bass
Peter Bwalya : on rhythm guitar

If you happen to be a fan of late 1960s to early 1970s rock music, then the music of “Ngozi Family” will undoubtedly strike a chord in your heart.

If I were to convey the band’s image super roughly, I would say that they play with the manner of Jimi Hendrix with riff-heavy groove which could be heard from the early days of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, however rhythm section keeps it as straightforward as possible (not as complicated as what you hear from Mitch and Noe) but very lively, all while delivering a compelling message.

The raw sound of this album that distinguishes it from what you hear in nowadays’ overproduced rock music is one of its great charms that appeals to listeners.

As they are fundamentally Christians, “Jesus Christ” is occasionally involved in the lyrics, however, as long as you don’t have a twisted anti-religious sentiment and can view it objectively, it will not be a problem. (After all, even the Stones and Dylan have covered blues numbers about Christ…)

My favorite tracks are “Hi Babe,” the second song, and “I Wanna Know,” the third song.

With simple lyrics that resonate in any era, these songs take a lively, garage rock approach. However, when Paul’s guitar solo with a heavy “fuzz” sound kicks in, you can’t help but feel an eerily captivating atmosphere (in a good way).

The fifth track, “Tikondane,” has got a cool Velvet Underground vibe to it, but unfortunately, because the lyrics are sung in their native language, we cannot understand what the song is about.

The seventh track, “Let Me Know,” has a heartwarming effect as the sentimentally touching melody perfectly matches the line in the chorus: “Please let me know what you think about me.”

The raw and energetic sound, coupled with rhythm-driven songs, can be experienced throughout the entire album and that is creating a sense of live performance, I believe.
And the album makes you feel like entering a new youth-filled journey. w

The Ghetto

The second recommended release is the solo album “The Ghetto” by the band’s leader, “Paul Ngozi“.

Although it’s referred to as a solo project, it’s essentially a trio band formation without the rhythm guitarist Peter Bwalya who played for “Day Of Judgement” album.

In this album, several medium-tempo tracks are featured and some of them have got a pleasant reggae vibe (more precisely, a reggae-ish feel) and it somehow evokes thoughts of Bob Marley.

The lyrics are also remarkable.


The first track, “Ghetto,” addresses parents in the impoverished area, singing a message like, “Stop drinking irresponsibly and think about your children’s future! Otherwise, when you become old, they won’t come near you.” I believe this type of song resonates beyond its time.


The second track, “Help Me,” makes you feel like commenting, “Hey, isn’t the guitar riff in the verse the same as the one in the first track of Day Of Judgement album?”, but there is actually a subtle difference. w

Well, that’s part of its charm…

The fifth track, which is called “Suicide,” rocks.

It delivers a message like, “No matter what your family does to you, no matter if your girlfriend betrays you, no matter what your mother says, you must never commit suicide.”
By the way, I remember committing suicide is considered a sin in Christianity, …if my memory serves me well?

The third, sixth, and eighth tracks are sung in their native language, however, the resonance of unfamiliar words combined with the interplay of rock guitars sounds absolutely captivating.

I cannot understand all the lyrics here but I believe the album has got a theme like “do not give up in adversity you are confronting” which likely symbolize the state of the country at that time. This is s a great album!

45,000 volts

I had decided to pick three albums, so for the last one, I was in two minds between “My Ancestors” and “45,000 Volts” but I ended up selecting the latter.

Once you see this cheesy but great-looking sleeve, I am sure you can understand why I had no choice but to choose this one.

From the very first track, the guitar’s heavy fuzz sound gives you a momentary thought of “Wait, did they go into metal territory?”

But then, the drums kick in with a dry, simple, and lively sound reminiscent of Charlie Watts from The Rolling Stones, while the bass drives forward with a gritty determination, making it clear that it’s not a metal sound.

And Paul doesn’t just go all-out on guitar throughout the songs and that gives us an impression that he is prioritizing his vocals and rhythm with this album.

There are often no rhythm guitars and the vocals are backed solely by the drums and bass.

In this familiar Ngozi style, it goes on and on, and we eventually reach this sixth track. This song called “House of Fear” sounds the highlight of the album to me… wouldn’t you agree?

Speaking of the intriguing (in a good way) nature of Paul’s guitar, I personally find it shares similarities with Neil Young’s cheesiness. They both seem to intentionally poke at those embarrassing, “cringeworthy” aspects of being human, creating a captivating allure. w

Throughout the entire album, there is a brightness and a strong African essence that shines through the vocals, and these elements are making this album fat. The rhythms are tight, and the album is filled with a sense of liberation.

If this album had been released in Europe or America, riding the wave of the zeitgeist, I am confident it would have become a classic in rock history, and people would still be talking about it to this day.

Finally, as you can see from watching the YouTube video of “Zamrock” which I featured in the beginning, Zambia during that time was grappling with the epidemic of AIDS, and sadly, the majority of the Zambian rock ‘n’ rollers who rocked through the 70s and 80s fell victim to HIV and passed away.

The rock scene in Zambia faded away as described, but luckily, we can now enjoy these recordings through reissued vinyl records.

というわけで、みなさんは “Zamrock” (ザム・ロック)という言葉をご存知でしょうか？



アフリカのイメージとロックミュージックが結びつかないという方もいらっしゃると思いますが、実は1970年代は半ば、アフリカの南部に位置する国 “Zambia” (ザンビア)では、ロックが熱く盛り上がっていました。


Witch (僕の職場の同僚のザンビア出身のおっちゃんは、メンバーと知りあいだったらしい) を筆頭に、Ngozi Family, Amanaz など、イカしたロックバンドを世に送り出しています。

彼らの音楽がストライクゾーンに入っているという方は結構いらっしゃるのでは？


てなわけで、今回は僕が一時期ハマりにハマった一押しのこのバンド “Ngozi Family” のおすすめのアルバムを、ここで３枚ほど紹介していきます。

Day Of Judgement

まずはこの “Day Of Judgement” ですが…

ここでこのアルバムの音楽的な部分について書く前に、このアルバムが出た頃の時代背景について少し触れておこうと思います。


このアルバムがリリースされたのは1975年ということですが、ロンドンやニューヨークでは「パンクロック」がまさに花咲こうとしている年。


一方で、この時期アフリカでは何が起こっていたのかというと、当時のザンビアの隣接国、西のアンゴラ、そして東のモザンビークでは、紛争の末に長年のポルトガルによる植民地支配の状態から独立を達成。南アフリカ共和国では、黒人たちが白人社会から課せられたアパルトヘイト制度に苦しめられているという状態。


ザンビアは、1964年にイギリスの植民地支配から独立を達成していますが、南に位置するサウスローデシア（のちのジンバブエ）と、もめている状態。

そんな中で、ザンビアの数少ないロックミュージシャン達は、もともとイギリスの植民地だったということで、ジミヘン、テン・イヤーズ・アフター、クリームなどの “UKロック” に影響を受けていたようです。

リーダーの “Paul Ngozi” (同僚によると「ンゴズィ」と発音される)は、自身のバンドを “Ngozi Family” と改名する前は、大好だったバンド “テン・イヤーズ・アフター” にリスペクトをはらう意味で “テン・イヤーズ・ビフォー” と名乗って活動していたという話が…

さて本題に戻りまして、ここで取り上げているアルバム “Day Of Judgement” に関してですが、レコーディングのメンバーは、

Paul Ngozi : on vocals and lead guitar
Chrissy Zebby Tempo : on drums
Tommy Mwale : on bass
Peter Bwalya : on rhythm guitar

といった編成。



あなたがもしも、60年代後半から70年代初期のロックミュージックが好きなのであれば、この “Ngozi Family” の音楽は心にグサッと刺さること間違いなしです。

バンドのイメージを超乱雑に伝えるとするならば、初期の “レッドツェッペリン” や “ブラックサバス” ばりのリフを ”ジミヘン” 寄りのノリで、しかしながら、リズムセクションはミッチとノエルほど複雑ではなく、軽快なドラムとシンプルなベースをバックにグイグイと前に押しながらメッセージを伝えているという感じですかね。

現在のロックミュージックのように、オーバープロデュースされていない生々しい音も大きな魅力のうちの１つです。



歌詞に関しては、基本的にクリスチャンなので、歌詞に時折キリストさんが絡んできますが、あなたが変にアンチ宗教的な感覚を持っていなくて、客観的な視点で捉えることができるのであれば、苦にはならないと思います。(ストーンズ や ディラン だって、キリストさんに関して歌われたブルースナンバーを歌ってるわけですし… )



僕の好きなナンバーは、2曲目の “Hi Babe” と３曲目の “I wanna know“。


どの時代にもマッチするシンプルな歌詞をのせて、ガレージロック調に進んでいくこれらの曲は軽快なんだけど、ファズサウンドをきかせたポールのソロが入ってくると、なんとも異様な雰囲気(もちろんいい意味での)を感じずにはいられません。


５曲目の “Tikondane” も、ベルベット・アンダーグランド調でカッコイイですが、残念ながら歌詞は自国の言葉で歌われているため理解不可能。


７曲目の “Let me know” は、サビの部分の「どうか僕について君がどう思っているのか教えてください。」ってラインが、切ないメロディーとうまくマッチしていて胸キュンです。


ライブ感まる出しの荒削りな音と、リズムを大事にした曲がアルバム全体を通して聴くことができて、新たな青春が始まりますよ。W

The Ghetto

2番目のおすすめ音源は、リーダーである “Paul Ngozi” のソロアルバム “The Ghetto” となります。


ソロとは言っても、さっきのアルバムからリズムギターのピーターさんが抜けただけで、基本的にはトリオのバンド編成です。

このアルバムでは、ミディアムテンポの曲が多く、心地よいレゲエ (正確にはレゲェを感じさせる）ナンバーがいくつかフィーチャーされていて、なんとなくボブ・マーレーを連想させられます。

詩も素晴らしいです。


“Ghetto” (貧民エリア) で子供を持つお父ちゃんお母ちゃんに「酒を飲むのをいい加減にやめて、子供達の将来を考えろよ！じゃないとオマエらがジジィババァになった時に、彼らはそばに近寄らないぜ。」なんてメッセージで歌われる１曲目は、時代を超えて共感できる曲です。


２曲目の “Help me” は、はじめに紹介したアルバムの１曲目 “Day Of Judgement”とverse の部分のギターのリフが同じやんけ！と突っ込みたくなりますが、微妙に異なります。(w)

まぁ、この辺は愛嬌ということで…



5曲目の “Suicide” は、ロックしてますね。
「家族に何をされようが、彼女に裏切られようが、お母ちゃんに何を言われようが、アンタ自殺だけはしちゃいけないよ。」って内容の曲です。そういえば、キリスト教って自殺は罪でしたっけ？


３曲目、6曲目、８曲目は自国の言葉で歌われていますが、知らない言葉の響きとロックギターのかみ合いがすごく新鮮。


歌詞の内容全ては分からないですが、アルバム全体のテーマとしては、「逆境に負けるな！」という感じですかね。おそらく当時の国の状態を象徴しているという感じなのでしょう。ナイスなアルバムです。

45,000 volts

紹介するのは３枚と決めていたので、最後の１枚は “My Ancestors” ってアルバムと、”45,000 volts” のどっちにしようか迷いましたが、結局後者に落ち着きました。

もうこの胡散臭いジャケットを見たら、コチラを選ばざるをえなかった気持ちはわかってもらえますよね。

１曲目からギターの “fuzz” の音がかなりヘヴィーで、「え、メタルに走った？」と思いきや、ドラムはストーンズのチャーリー・ワッツばりにドライ、シンプルで軽快なサウンド、ベースは硬派に突き進むという感じなので、メタルサウンドにはなりません。

ギターも曲全体で弾きまくるのではなく、ポールさんは歌とリズムに重点を置いているという印象。

リズムギターは、ほぼ弾いていなくて、ヴォーカルのバックはドラムとベースだけって時が結構あります。

こんな感じで、いつも通りの “Ngozi節” はガンガン進んで６曲目。アルバムの目玉はやはりこの “House of Fear” なのではないのでしょうか？

ポールのギターの胡散臭さ(もちろん良い意味で)といえば、ニール・ヤングのそれとも共通すると個人的には思いますね。何か人間の「そこは恥ずかしい」みたいな部分を、わざと突っついているようなイヤラシさを持っています。w

アルバム全体を通して、明るさがあり、アフリカ感がボーカルにすごく表れていて、油が乗った作品です。そして、リズムもタイトで、開放感にあふれています。



もしも時流にうまく乗って、ヨーロッパやアメリカで発売されていたのなら、ロックヒストリーに名を残すクラッシックアルバムとして、今頃いろんな人に聞かれていた作品であっただろうと僕は確信できます。

最後に、冒頭のビデオを見てもらってもわかるように、当時のザンビアは “AIDS” が流行していて、70年代、80年代を突っ走ったザンビアのロックンローラー達のほとんどは、残念なことにHIVに感染してあの世へ行ってしまいました。


ザンビアのロックシーンは、こうやって消えていってしまったわけですが、ラッキーなことに私たちは現在、これらのレコーディングを復刻版のレコードで楽しめるというわけです。

👉 Discover the Magnetic Charm of Ngozi Family: Zambia’s Legendary Rock Band!

With this article, I’m going to feature some albums which are performed by a South African jazz pianist and composer called “Dollar Brand” who is presently known as “Abdullah Ibrahim”.

When I think of recordings which are performed by jazz pianists either as a solo or as a band’s leader, most of them that come up in my head are of Blue Note label’s or a selection of standard numbers performed with each one’s own style. 

And when I try to look for the pianists who are doing something else other than of these styles, you will end up with Monk, Jaki Byard, Cecil Taylor, or Mal Waldron.

As I had been searching for someone who could give me some new mind-blowing experience, I came across this Dollar Brand’s music via YouTube, and surprisingly, he’s from South Africa but not from America.

If I am to describe his piano playing, it’s like a mixture of beauty and strength surging like a rumbling of the ground?

…and this could satisfy your appetite for some new musical experience just like this is what you have been longing for!!!

I’ve only met his music quite recently, but I can say that he plays the piano with the most persuasive and the most adventurous way I have ever listened within a category of jazz!!! 

Ever since my first Dollar-Brand-experience, I’ve been so attracted to his music that whenever I make some kind of achievement which is worth giving myself a bit of reward, I create a good excuse to buy one of his records.

Many of his recordings are done with the organs as well as with the piano, but here I have selected his five great albums which are all performed with the latter.

African piano

His monumental work in 1970.

My impression of the very beginning of the first track is like an endless flow of a big river… so powerful! It’s so powerful that once you get tripped up, that will be it…

And then, after a little while, you can hear heavy drops of his right hand pressing the piano keys just like lightning is striking the flow of the river. 

It’s so heavy and sounds sacred that stopping the music here is probably like acting against the nature, hence you might call down Divine wrath!

There are 4 tracks on each side of the record, and they are performed without an interval.

I suppose how it’s done here is called “suite”, and you can’t help taking your hat off to his concentration.

I’m sure you will enjoy listening to the dramatic traffic of some sense of hope and agony in his playing and I guarantee it’s 100 times more impressive than watching some movies.

This album is possibly the appropriate one to pick to get to know his music.

African sketchbook

The 1^st track is not something what you would expect from jazz pianist’s album.

The title of it is called “Air” and it is a flute solo.

Its performance with an idyllic and some teasing sort of vibe is really refreshing no matter how many times you listen to. And there is even some kind of nostalgia in it.

From the 2^nd track onward is a sublime suite of piano solo, so I guess this track plays a role of appetizer for it.

And then entering the 2^nd track… The work of “genius”!

It’s probably just me but the introduction of the suite gives me an impression of some kind of theme for graduation ceremony.

It opens quietly, but these are the compositions of the master pianist “Dollar Brand”. He won’t let you graduate easily. w 

It goes like a roller coaster till the end.

And again, there are no intervals between the tracks.

An epic drama is waiting for you just like what you can experience in “African Piano” album, but this album is more like… things are happening in the air rather than in the flow of a big river…

I’ve never been to, but this could be how it is like in heaven… w

B side of the record includes 6 tracks (2^nd track comprises 3 themes) and it sounds even more abstract comparing to A side, therefore it’s very difficult to distinguish each track… 

However, it doesn’t really matter, to be honest.

By this point, you will be completely absorbed in his world, and you might be feeling just like looking over the ground from the sky or looking up the sky from the grass field of Africa…

While you are having a sort of hallucinations, the scenery in your head keeps changing, and you will be hearing the theme of the 2^nd track of A side which is the beginning of the suite before you knew it… 

This album is epic!

Absolutely, recommended. 

Children of Africa

A couple of albums I have featured so far are his solo performance, but this is a trio one.

The introduction (or the theme) of the 1^st track which has got the name of the title of this album is absolutely catchy, and I love it.

It will be most likely to sound pop and cheesy, if the composition is played by some other pianists, however, the powerful touch of his piano playing is formidably persuasive, therefore it gives you nothing but refreshing impression.

And I can hear Duke Ellington’s influence in his rippling-wave-like fine descending notes.

This is a classic album.



The second track is called “ASR”.

An amazing trio performance and it sounds so cool…

I sensed something ominous is going to happen from its intro… and I was right. w

You will be hit by a storm and crumbled. All you can do is to pray that something will be remaining under your feet.

The 3^rd track is also impeccable.

It starts with bass, and then drums… and while they are creating a certain ambience, Mr. Brand comes in with his own vocal.

After that, he picks up his soprano saxophone, and then his piano playing follows… then great bass solo… drum solo…ahhhhh…

I’m sure I would be drinking by now if I wasn’t working following day.

B side’s band performance is also amazing. It’s the level of mission impossible! W

Roy Brooks’ drumming is c,razy and Cecil McBee’s bass playing is just something else!

The final song “YUKIO” was said to be named after his Karate teacher from whom he had been learning for 7 years.

It goes on overwhelmingly crazy till the end. 

The Journey

This album is performed by 11 musicians (orchestra?), hence it naturally has got a deeper sound than 3 albums I have picked above. 

Anyway, the 1^st track on A side is called “Sister Rosie”.

It’s a happy tune and sounds very African. 

This type of lively danceable number can be often heard in African people’s carnival, I reckon.

And with a happy introduction, 2^nd track sounds catchy…

and… oh no, I got totally betrayed!

It didn’t last long, and it has gone abstract! w

Since I had spotted Don Cherry on the back side of the sleeve earlier, so I kind of thought it wouldn’t be straightforward… and.. it didn’t! w

After each member’s solo performance, everybody comes in and it goes into a trance…  and eventually they will bring it back to the theme. Peace is around once again.

And the main course is on B side.

Only one tune.

A masterpiece that goes over 20 minutes.

It’s called “HAJJ” and with English title??? it’s called “The Journey”

Absolutely, overwhelming.

Mr. Brand just keeps playing the same riff with his piano on this very long tune which has got an ambience of Middle East.

I personally think that it has got a similar vibe to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” in their Physical Graffiti album, although the speed is totally different…

Each member of the band gives a solo performance by turns and they successfully create a dismal and very anxious mood. 

This is an amazing number, but not the best song to pick for your lunch in the sunny afternoon, I guess. hahaha…

African Dawn

This is the work of his piano solo in 1983.

Mr. Brand is playing the digital piano here, therefore you might find the mood around this album slightly different from his other piano albums.

And I think this digital piano sound is really matching up with the word “Dawn” which is included in the title of this record very well.

I personally found the style of this album is quite similar to his monumental work “African Piano” which I had featured in the beginning, but is it just me???

You can actually hear the same piano riff that appears on the 1^st track of “African Piano” towards the end of A side of this album (and also the one that appears in “African sketchbook”?).

When it comes to the digital piano, I had got a biased viewpoint which is like… the instrument is generally used by a formally-dressed young lady who has been hired to play some neutral numbers behind some posh people socialising with a glass of champagne in their hand in some party venue whose building is made of marble.

But this album has changed my impression a little bit. w

Whichever instrument it is, if it is played by the master, it will sound awesome, I’ve found out.

The other thing to note here other than the usage of the digital piano about this album is that it differentiates from the other 4 albums because the record includes some jazz standard numbers on its B side.

However, they are perfectly fitting in with other tracks, therefore you can listen throughout the album really comfortably.

This is an absolutely beautiful chill-out album.

Well… so, this is it about Dollar Brand’s piano albums…

今回の記事では、サウスアフリカ出身の「ダラー・ブランド」という名で知られているジャズピアニストで作曲家 (現在はアブドゥーラ・イブラヒムの名前で通っている) のアルバムを紹介していきます。

僕が知ってるジャズピアニスト達のリーダーアルバムは、ブルーノート録音のイメージか、スタンダードナンバーを集めて自分のスタイルで弾いたもの、ってのがほとんど。

このタイプでないことをやっているピアニストを探そうとする度に、結局モンクやジャキ・バイヤード、そしてセシル・テイラーか、マル・ウォルドロンに落ち着いてしまう。


他にも脳ミソを吹っ飛ばしてくれるようなアーティストはいないのだろうか？と、フラストレーションの内をさまよっていたところ、YouTube経由でこのダラー・ブランドさんの音楽に遭遇。

しかも、ジャズなのに、アメリカではなく、なんとサウスアフリカから…

彼のピアノ演奏を形容するなら、美しさと力強さが、地響きのように襲ってくる、とでも言いましょうか？

まさに「おお~っ、こんな風に打ちのめされるのを、待っていた!!!」ってな感じで、感動の嵐を届けてくれます。

ダラー・ブランドの音楽に出会ったのは、結構最近なのですが、正直今まで聞いてきたジャズピアニストたちの誰よりもカッコいいです。たまらんっス!!!

以来、虜になってしまい、何か仕事が一段落するたびに「自分へのご褒美」と理由をつけては、レコードをあさっている次第であります。

彼のアルバムには、オルガンを演奏しているものも多々ありますが、今回ここではピアノ演奏によるものにしぼって、5枚ほど紹介していきます。

African Piano

1970年のアルバム。

大作です。

1曲目から、大きな河川の流れが延々と続いているような感じですかね。とにかく力強いです。一度足をすくわれたら、もうなす術はありません。

そしてしばらくすると、右手によって叩きつけられる音が、稲妻のように川の流れに打ち落とされていきます。

レコードの針を途中で止めようものなら、おそらく天罰を喰らうであろう、ってほどの勢いです。

A面に4曲、そしてB面に4曲入っているのですが、この4曲ずつが切れ目なく演奏されています。

恐らくこういうのを「組曲」と呼ぶのでしょうが、この恐ろしい集中力にはひれ伏すばかりです。

彼の演奏の中に発見することができる、希望の光と苦悩が行き来するドラマは、その辺の映画を見るよりは、あなたを数100倍感動させてくれることを保証します！

African Sketchbook

いきなり意表をつかれます。

一曲目 (題名AIR) がいきなり「笛」のソロ演奏です。

素朴な感じと、人を食ってかかったような演奏は、何度聴いても新鮮です。妙な懐かしささえ感じます。

続く２曲目以降が、壮大なピアノソロによる組曲になっているんで、その前に入っているこのチューンが、ちょうど前菜的な役割を果たしていて、素晴らしいです。

そして２曲目に突入。…「天才」です。

イントロが、…すごく個人的な意見ですが、「卒業式」と言った感じのイメージですかね。

静かに始まりますが、そこはブランドさん。
ただでは、卒業させてくれません。w　

8曲目まで一気にローラーコースター。


またしても曲と曲の間の切れ目はありません。

壮絶なドラマがあなたを待ち受けていますが、先ほど紹介した「African Piano」が大河とすれば、今回は空中を駆け抜けている感じですかね。

あぁ〜天国って行った事ないけど、なんかこんな感じなのかも。w

B面は、6曲入り（2曲目は3つのテーマに分かれている）ですが、A面と比べたら、さらにアブストラクトすぎて、どれがどの曲なのか…

ていうか、ここまでくると、そんなことは正直どうでもいいですね。


なんか、空の上から地上を眺めているような、それともアフリカの草原の中から、空を眺めているような…

脳みそがボ〜ッとしている間に、色々と景色が変わって行き、気がついたらA面の２曲目、つまりピアノが始まった時のテーマに戻ってきて終わりを迎えた。

かなりヤバいアルバムです。オススメです。

Children of Africa

先ほどの2枚は、ソロ演奏でしたが、今回はトリオ編成。

アルバムのタイトル曲のイントロ、というか短いこの曲のテーマそのもの…すごくキャッチーです。

大好きですね、こういうの。

他のピアニストが弾いたら、おそらくポップで胡散臭く聞こえてしまうのが目に見えているのですが、この人のピアノを弾く力強いタッチには、恐ろしい説得力があるため、爽快感以外を感じることはできないでしょう。

細かい音使いが、波のように通り過ぎていく感じには、デューク・エリントンの影響が感じられます。

クラッシックアルバムです。

続いて「ASR」と呼ばれる2曲目。

バンド演奏最高。かっこいいです。


イントロのテーマが少し不吉だな…と思っていたら、やっぱりやられました。w 


嵐に巻き込まれて、ボロボロにされてしまいます。最後まで自分の足元が残っているように、ただただ祈るばかりです。

３曲目も非の打ち所がありません。

ベースライン、ドラミング…すごい雰囲気が出ているなぁ、と思っている間に、ブランドさん、ボーカルで入ってきます。

そして、ソプラノサックスを挟んで、みじかいピアノ演奏。ベースソロ、ドラムソロ、テーマに沿って…  

あぁ…明日仕事じゃなかったら、もうここで飲んじゃってるね。

B面もすごいバンド演奏です。もう、ありえないレヴェルです。w 

ドラムのブルークスさんもすごいですが、ベースのマクビーさんなんか、もう変人ですね。

最後の曲は、彼が7年間も空手を習っている先生の名前「YUKIO」がタイトルになっています。


最後の最後まで、圧巻です。

The Journey

このアルバムはオーケストラ編成? です。

ということで、上にあげた3枚よりも音が埋まっています。（当たり前か！）

A面１曲目のスィスター・ロウジー。

ハッピーで、とてもアフリカンな曲です。

どっかのカーニバルとかで、普通に演奏されてそうな、踊れるご機嫌なナンバーです。



そして２曲目も続いてキャチーで、ハッピーなイントロ。

…と思いきや… やられました。アブストラクトでした。w 

ドン・チェリーの名前がレコードの裏にクレジットされていたので、このままでは終わらない、とは思っていましたが…やっぱり。w

メンバーのソロのあと、全員が合流してトランス状態に… そして最終的にイントロのテーマに戻って、平和が再び訪れます。

…そして、B面のメインコース。１曲のみ。

20分超えの大作です。

 
”HAJJ” と呼ばれると同時に、別名 (または英語名？) がこのアルバムのタイトルでもある「ザ・ジャーニー」。

圧倒されます。

やや中東風の雰囲気を持つこの長い曲で、ブランドさんは、ピアノで延々と同じリフを弾き倒します。

ロックで言えば、曲のスピードこそ違えど、レッド・ツェッペリンの「フィジカル・グラフィティー」に入っている「カシミール」に共通するものを感じますかね。

バンドのバンドのメンバーが、順番にソロをとっていくわけですが、すごく不安で不吉な雰囲気を漂わせています。

素晴らしい曲ですが、天気の良い晴れた午後に、ランチを食べながら聴くような音楽ではありませんね、どちらかというと。ハハハ。

African Dawn

1983年の作品。ピアノソロ演奏です。

デジタルピアノが使われているので、今までのアルバムと音的に雰囲気が少し変わりますかね。

タイトルのDawn (夜明け)感がよく出ています。

このアルバムに、1番はじめにとりあげた、1970年発表の衝撃の1枚「African Piano」に共通するヴァイブを感じるのは、僕だけでしょうか???　

実際、A面の後半では一曲目と同じリフを聞くことができますし…
(African sketchbookで聞いたフレーズも入ってるような…)

デジタルピアノって個人的には、大理石でできた建物のパーティー会場で、お金持ちの人たちがシャンペンを片手に会話を交わしているバックで、お嬢さんピアニストが当たり障りのない曲を弾いているイメージだったのですが、このアルバムを聞いて少しイメージが変わったような気がします。w

やっぱり弾く人が弾けばカッコいいです。

デジタルピアノの使用以外に、上にあげた他の4枚と違うのは、B面にスタンダードの曲が入っていることですが、自然とアルバムの雰囲気に溶け込んでいて、気持ちがいいです。

なんとも美しい、リラックスできるアルバムです。

というわけで以上です。

皆さんの中で、これを機にダラーブランドさんの音楽を聴き始めて、虜になってしまった人が多くなれば嬉しいです。

Have you ever heard of an artist called “Ali Farka Toure” ?


He is a folk singer/guitarist from “Mali” which is located in West Africa, and first time I listened to his music was… when I was a university student.

At that time, I used to live in Amagasaki city in Hyogo prefecture and there was a group of people who were really into blues music.


As I hung out with them, I naturally I started collecting blues records as well as participating in blues jam sessions.

Among those people whom I was hanging out with, there was this shrewd guitarist who was able to steal the style of “Lighting” Hopkins” and “John Lee Hooker” so effortlessly.


He was jobless at the time and had just moved out from his flat, so he was basically crashing in from one place to another.


He once rang me up (woke me up, to be precise!) during the night and told me that he only had 500 yen [=a few pounds at that time] left and asked me whether he should keep that money for using as a deposit to rent a room (Who the hell would take that amount!) or get a bottle of cold sake to sleep with…

I don’t quite remember how the conversation ended, but I am sure he opted for the second option! w

Anyway, this very man recommended me


“Ali Farka Toure”

whose music I am going to introduce here.

I had not listened to his music for a while, but one of his old recordings had just been re-issued lately, therefore, I bought the LP and listened to it…

…and it was absolutely brrrilliant! 💕

So, here, I have selected three of his amazing records and I am going to introduce them.

Ali Farka Toure (1987) 

There is this self-titled LP which was released in 1987 by a British world-music record label called “World Circuit“, and this was the very first album I was to experience


“Ali Farka Toure” ‘s music


which was brought in by aforementioned “cold-sake-drinking shrewd guitarist.

As I’m listening to this now, it still sounds fresh and heart-warming.

Back in the days of university student, I’d had an impression of something more bluesy about this album, however, in fact, it is just the guitar licks he uses which shows the style of some country blues music.


This is actually the album of folk music, I’ve realised.

While you listen to black American’s country blues, you hear the story of…


“drunkenness”

“prostitution”

“mischievousness”

“sadness”

“hopelessness”


and so on…

and it might match up well with the ambience of dim lights in the bar and night clubs, on the contrary, what is illuminating Ali Farka Toure’s music is definitely the sunlight of Africa.

And I feel that the sunlight in this particular album has got a vibe of the evening twilight, which can be found in a Japanese lullaby “Crows are cawing, so it’s time to go home”…


A sort of relaxing ambience that we sometimes get surrounded by towards the end of the day.

It’s also nice to hear him singing and playing the guitar with a very simple setting… backed by only bongo and *calabash (and they are both played by himself with the recording).

I highly recommend this album!!!

Ali Farka Toure (Red Album)

The next one is this “Red album” !!!

This album was originally released by French record company called “Disques Esperanto” in 1984, but the LP record was reissued in Europe by British record label called “World Circuit” in March 2021. (Hooray!)

Besides, it comes with Obi strip and also the insert is kindly included just like Japanese issues!

Most of his early recordings have no title and simply his name was put on their sleeves, therefore it can be tricky when it comes to explaining which album you are talking about.

However, regarding this album, because the colour of its sleeve (around the picture) was red with the 1^st issue, it is often called “Red album” to distinguish from the others.

Anyway, compared with the album which was released in 1987 (the one I recommended earlier), this one sounds somewhat bluesier…

I also could hear the distinctive “sound” or “boogie-woogie groove” of “John Lee Hooker” (an American blues musician) here and there in his guitar playing and thought it was really cool…

Then, I found the fact in Wikipedia and in some reviews that he had actually been dubbed “African John Lee Hooker”. w

I’ve also found him in one article (The Guardian) being upset about this fact.

When it comes to art/music, it is quite common that what had inspired you during the early stage of your artistic career comes out naturally as a part of your work in one way or another.

So, it must be frustrating if somebody captures only a part of your source and take its very part just for the purpose of comparing so that they can describe the artist easily,

Well anyway, putting the matter aside, this is simply a cool album.

I reckon some people might find the fact of bluesy numbers (I am not talking about the bluesy sound of electric-guitar-playing here. Besides his songs don’t have 12 bar chord progression, which is typical of blues music, either) being sung by non-English language fresh and fascinating.

Also, the synchronization between his voice (double tracking?) and percussion-playing is emphasizing the ethnic ambience.

This is a crispy album where you can experience both the “heat” of Africa and the “breeziness” of his proficient guitar playing in one.

ALI TOURE FARKA (1977)

This album (EP?) where his middle and sir name were put the other way round on its sleeve is one of his early recordings released in 1977 by French record company called “Sonafric” that exclusively deals with African music.

I personally think this is a beautiful album where you can hear his sublime guitar-playing.


However, the fact that it was recorded with no percussions and repetitive sound of fiddle-playing can be heard throughout the few songs might give people an impression that this album is not “Pop” enough.

Therefore, I assume this album could be “love it or hate it” type…

If you are a sort of person who could listen to …let’s say …the old recordings of Woody Gurthrie without getting tired, you will be fine with this album.

Anyway, I have introduced my personal his greatest three albums so far, but if I am to select his commercially popular albums, they will be…

“River” which was released in 1990.

… and “Talking Timbuktu” (1994) which is featuring American musician “Ry Cooder”.

And finally, “Ali and Toumani” (2010) which is a work of collaboration between Ali and a country folk called “Toumani Diabate” who plays the instrument called “Kora”.

However, from the “River” on wards, he often plays electric guitar, and from my point of view, he sometimes goes over the top and the music gets too busy.

And as for the album which was recorded with Ry Cooder, the typical drumming style for rock music, which can be heard often with the performance of electric guitar blues, spoils the good ethnic vibes that exist in Ali’s music.

And finally, regarding the collaborative album with “Toumani Diabate”, it sounds absolutely beautiful, however, those skillful instrumental recordings can be just like BGM in the restaurant, I have to say.


(They are only my personal opinion, just in case…)

After all, there is no “wabi-sari” or a kind of “magic”, which once existed in his early recordings, in these commercially successful ones, and they sound just like those typical recordings by the artists who have become …a “celebrity”.

Therefore, they are not my cup of tea…

In conclusion, I recommend those early stuff whose sleeve has only his name with no title.

“Ali Farka Toure” （アリ・ファルカ・トゥーレ）というアーティストをみなさんご存知ですか？

アフリカの西側に位置する国、”Mali” 出身の弾き語りのミュージシャンなのですが、僕が初めて彼の音楽と出会ったのは、遠い昔の大学生の頃。

当時、兵庫県の尼崎に住んでいた僕のまわりには、ブルースにのめり込んでいる奴らがたくさんいて、彼らとつるんでいる間に僕も自然とブルースのレコードを集めたり、ブルースのジャムセッションに参加したりするようになって行ったワケなんですが、

そのつるんでいたウチの一人に、“ライトニン・ホプキンス” と、“ジョン・リー・フッカー”のスタイルを、いとも簡単にパクってしまう凄腕のギターリストがいて、

(アパートを立ち退いて、いろんな所を転々としていた無職の彼は、残りの持ち金が500円となったところで、自分がその金を頭金にしてアパートの一室を借りるべきか（そんなところあるか！）それともローソンで冷酒を手に入れるべきかと、

夜中に電話で相談を持ちかけてくる強者でもあった。記憶にあまり残っていないが、間違いなく２番目の選択をしたはずである。w ）

その彼に当時薦められたのが、今回ここで紹介させていただく、


「アリ・ファルカ・トゥーレ」

である。

しばらくの間、聞いていなかったのですが、最近再発売されたレコードを購入して聞いてみたところ、何ともイイ感じではあ〜りませんか！💕

というわけで今回の記事では、彼のアルバムを3枚ほど紹介させていただきます。

Ali Farka Toure (1987)

“World Circuit” というレコード会社から1987年にリリースされたこのアルバムが、先に述べた 冷酒 “ごろつき” ギターリスト (敬意を込めて) の彼に紹介してもらった、僕にとって初めての


「アリ・ファルカ・トゥーレ」

の音源だったわけですが…

いやぁ〜…　あれから何年か経った今聞いてみても、心温まるアルバムです。

大学時代に聞いていた頃の印象としては、もっとブルース色が強いアルバムだったと思ったのですが、実際のところは彼の使うギターフレーズの節々に、カントリーブルースの影響が見え隠れするだけで、今聞いてみると、どちらかといえば「民謡」に近い感じですね。

アメリカの黒人ブルースには、独特の…


「酒の臭い」

「売春婦の影」

「ワルさ」

「悲しさ」

「やるせなさ」


みたいなものが漂っていて、

夜の街や、薄暗いバーを照らす照明が似合う感じなのですが、(それはそれでカッコイイのですが）アリ・ファルカ・トゥーレの音楽を照らしているのは、間違いなくアフリカの太陽です。


しかも、このアルバムは夕方の心地よい日差しという感じで、


「カラスが鳴くから、お家へ帰ろう」


的な、何ともリラックスさせてくれる雰囲気を漂わせています。

ボンゴプレイヤーとのデュオ、という編成もいいですね。

(レコーディングでは、ボンゴと*カラバシを彼自身が演奏しています。）

個人的にメチャメチャおすすめのアルバムです!!!

Ali Farka Toure (Red album)

続いてはこの「RED アルバム」!!!

元々は “Disques Esperanto” という、フランスはパリのレコードレーベルから1984年にリリースされた音源なのですが、2021年の３月にメデタイことに、ヨーロッパで、先ほど紹介した “WorldCircuit” レーベルからレコード盤として再発売されました。(イェイ!)

ちなみに、日本盤のように帯が付いていて、親切に歌詞カードも入っている！

「アリ・ファルカ・トゥーレ」の初期の音源は、どれもタイトルがなく、表紙に彼の名前だけが綴られているのみなので、人に説明するとなると少々ややこしいのですが、

初販のこのアルバムのジャケットの写真のまわりの色が、「赤」だったので “RED album” という名前で判別されているようです。　

さて、アルバムの印象ですが、先ほどあげた1987年のアルバムよりもブルース色が強い感じですかね。

彼のギタープレイの中で、所々に「ジョン・リー・フッカー」の「音」というか「boogie感」がが見え隠れしてカッケェーなぁ、と思っていたら…

なるほどウイキペディアや他のレヴューの記事で、彼が「アフリカのジョン・リー・フッカー」と呼ばれている事実が書かれているのを見つけました。w

この事に関して、彼が憤慨している記事（ガーディアン紙）もありましたが… 

まぁ、アートに関して言えば、影響を受けて吸収したものが、自然と自分の作品の中に浮き出てくるってのはよくある事ですが、その一部分だけつかまえて安易に比較されるってのは、あまり気分が良いものではないってのは、よくわかります。

とまぁ、そんなことは置いておいて、シンプルに「カッコいい」アルバムです。

単純に、ブルース感（エレキギターのブルースのそれとは違います。そんでもって曲の構成は、全く”12小節の形式”ではありません。念のために…) を持っている音楽が、英語以外の言語で歌われているところに 「ドッキン」とする人も、中にはいるのではないでしょうか？

彼の（二重に響く？）歌声と、パーカッションのサウンドがシンクロして、これがさらにエキゾチックな雰囲気を強調しています。

昼間の太陽の「熱」と「さわやかさ」が同居した、何ともクリスピーなアルバムです。

ALI TOURE FARKA (1977)

ミドルネームと苗字が、入れ替わっているこのアルバム (EP?) は、1977年にフランスの “Sonafric” という、アフリカの音楽を専門的に取り扱うレコード会社からリリースされた、初期作品のうちの一つ。

個人的には、彼の卓越したギタープレイが聴ける、とても美しい作品だと思うんですが、パーカッションが入っていないのと、曲のはじめから終わりまで、延々とバックで フィドルが演奏されているチューンがあったりと、

少々「ポップ感」に欠ける部分があるため、人によって好き嫌いがはっきり出るアルバムでもあるかと思います。

ウディー・ガスリー” などの、昔の音源を、永遠と聴ける人は、たぶん大丈夫なはずです。

とまぁ、ここまで個人的にベストだと思う彼の３枚のアルバムを紹介してきましたが、商業的に成功をおさめたポピュラーなアルバムとなると、他に



1990年の “The River”,

「ライ・クーダー」と共演している1994年の作品 “Talking Timbuktu”

そして “Kora” という楽器を奏でる、同じ「マリ」出身の “Toumani Diabate” との共演が聞ける、2010年の作品 “Ali and Toumani”

などが上げられると思います。

が…どうも “The River” 以降の作品は、エレキギターのサウンドが “too much” だったり、“ライ・クーダー”との共演作は、典型的なエレキギターによるブルース演奏のバックで聞かれる、ロックスタイルのベースやドラムのプレイに、Ali のカッコよさが台無し。


“Tounami”との共演作は、バリテクなインストアルバムで、悲しいかな、BGMになってしまう (全て個人的な意見です。念のため…) などと、何か初期の頃にあった「わび・さび」というか「マジック」みたいなものが失われて、あぁ、

“スターになってしまったのね…”

という感じで、個人的には “NG” です。

というわけで、最初の方に述べた


「どれもタイトルがなく、表紙に彼の名前だけが綴られているのみ」


の初期の頃のアルバムが、個人的には「オススメ」となります。

Africa is hot, and so is its music!

With this new series, I am going to write about some of my favourite “African musicians” I have been really into over the past few years!

Back in my younger days, I was mainly listening to rock, blues, and rhythm & blues type of music.

So, when it comes to African musicians, I had only listened to “Fela Kuti” for a few times and knew almost nothing at all, to be honest…

However, since the advent of the internet, we have been able to access all sorts of music from all over the world via YouTube channels…

Among all, the one I have found really “fresh” to my ears is this album called 

“Drums of Passion”

performed by a Nigerian musician called 

“Babatunde Olatunji”.

A blend of percussionists’ glowing performance and the “chant” performed between Olatunji and others totally matched up with what I had been looking for in African music!!!

I immediately purchased the LP, and became a fan of his music!

Anyway, here I have picked up his first three albums, and am giving you a brief idea of what they are like…

“DRUMS OF PASSION”

So, here is his debut album called　

“Drums of Passion”

which was released by Colombia records in 1959!!!

There are lots of African folk music available to listen out there which have been released by variety of record labels.

And majority of them were typically recorded live, hence some people might find the quality of these recording’s sound quite unlistenable, I assume…

However, despite the time it was released, the sound of this Olatunji’s album is not these sorts at all!

On the contrary, it sounds really “pop”!


And it is actually said that…

This very album had made African music popular for the first time in America and over the European countries.

It’s like you might find listening to “The Monroe Brothers” unbearable, but you are absolutely fine with “Hank Williams” when it comes to country music?

Anyway, this album is perfect!

As soon as a needle is dropped on the record, the scorching sun will glare on you!!!

You can surely feel its “heat”, however, all the songs are performed with just percussions and chants (with no overemotional vocals or stuffy electric guitar solos!), …so, it sounds rather crisp, I should say.

And there is not a single weak track in the album, so it just flies to the end…


You will be like… “Oh, really? Maybe one more round?” w

I guarantee that this album will certainly give you positive energy!!!

“ZUNGO! AFRO-PERCUSSION”

His second LP. 

From the very beginning, the African vibe will strike you!

Lots of guest musicians were invited for this recording.

The style of the music is fundamentally the same as the first album, however its atmosphere has slightly changed due to the appointment of horn players.

But, the same heat you could feel with his 1st album is totally present here. w

Having heard this amazing performance by percussionists with the sound of horns,

I can now easily imagine that how the master of spirituality “John Coltrane” was inspired by Olatunji’s music.

He probably went like…

“Oh man, I would love to improvise over this great sound of percussions with my tenor”

( …with Elvin Jones definitely frowning next to him. w)

The composition “Tunji (Toon-gee)” in his album titled as “Coltrane” (released in 1962) was dedicated to Olatunji.

Incidentally, I cannot help imagining that “Marion Brown” had also been influenced by Olatunji when I listen to the intro of the 2^nd track “ZUNGO”

This 2nd album is also brilliant and will provide you a sort of feeling that you are only a little something surrounded by a blessing from nature.

“FLAMING DRUMS”

And finally, the 3rd one with this cool sleeve.

Hence, the dancing keeps going on… w

Well, regarding the first track called “Abana’, I was sure that I had listened to this tune before…

…I was thinking and thinking… and it finally came to my mind.


The tune was in an album called “Jazz around the world” by Yusef Lateef who is known for having incorporated “Eastern vibes’ into jazz music

…and actually he was one of the guest players in Olatunji’s second album!  

(I feel happy that I have spotted it! 🎵)

Although, this album was recorded with some horns, its vibe is rather closer to the 1st album, I personally think…

(It is probably because the number of the guest player is smaller than the second one?)

Anyway, the tunes are exploding with positive energy.

You can imagine that the dancers are generating electricity by shaking their asses with lightning speed!!!

Wilting plants should get energized and would try to reach the sun?

(Probably they just need some water. w)

No chance to get dispirited!!!

このシリーズでは、ここしばらくの間、僕がハマりにハマっている「アフリカのミュージシャン」について紹介していこうと思います。

若い頃は主にロックやブルース、または、リズム＆ブルースなんかをメインに聞いていたので、アフリカのミュージシャンと言えば、Fela Kuti を数回聴いた程度で、他はほぼ何も知らなかったと言うのが正直なところ。

ところがインターネットの普及以来、YouTubeを通じていろんな音楽がアクセス可能に…
　

そんな中、すごく新鮮に感じたのが、アフリカはナイジェリア出身のミュージシャン

“Babatunde Olatunji“
(ババトゥンデ・オラトゥンジ)

によるデビュー作

“Drums of Passion” !!!

白熱のパーカッション + 彼のボーカルとバッキングボーカルの活気ある掛け合い (英語で “chant” と呼ばれる？) が、僕がアフリカ音楽に求めていたイメージに、ドンピシャにマッチング!!!

思わずLPを購入して、一気に大ファンになってしまいました。

と言うことで今回は彼の最初の３枚のアルバムを紹介していきます。

“DRUMS OF PASSION”

ということで、まずはコロンビアレコードからリリースされた、彼のファーストアルバム

“Drums of Passion”
（なんと1959年録音！）

アフリカの民族音楽はいろんなレコード会社から、たくさんの音源がリリースされていますが、大抵のものがストリートミュージックをライブ録音したもの。

これらの録音を音質的に受け付けられない方々もいるかもしれませんが、はその類のものではありません。

と言うよりも、かなりポップな仕上がりになっていて、実際のところ、

アフリカンミュージックを初めてアメリカやヨーロッパでポピュラーにしたアルバム

と言われています。

カントリーミュージックでいえば、モンローブラザーズはちょっとキツイけど、ハンク・ウィリアムスだったら聴けるって感じですかね。

とにかく完璧です。

まず、レコードの針を落とした瞬間に、あなたに太陽が照りつけます!!!

確かに “熱” を感じるのですが、全ての曲が打楽器とボーカルの掛け合い, またはパーカッションのみで構成されているので、どちらかといえば、爽やかともいえます。

変に感情的なボーカルや暑苦しいギターソロなんてのは入っていません。

ショボい曲はひとつも入っていないからはっと気がつくと聴き終わっている。

ええっ、もう… そんじゃもう一回行っとこうかな。ってな感じで、2周目もありですかね。w

と言うわけで、このパーカッションとボイスの掛け合いを聞けばやる気が湧き上がってくること間違いなしです!!!

“ZUNGO! AFRO – PERCUSSION”

2枚目のアルバム。

一曲目のイントロから、アフロ感があなたにストライクします。

このアルバムには、たくさんのゲストミュージシャンがクレジットされています。基本的なスタイルは１枚目と変わりませんが、ホーンが入っているので雰囲気がちょっと変わりますかね。

…とは言っても１枚目と同様、相変わらず太陽の日差しは強いです。w

このパーカッションにホーンが入っているのを実際に聞く事によって、”コルトレーン” (John Coltrane) が、オラトゥンジの音楽に感化されたと言われるのもわかるような気がしますね。


「おおっ、こんなパーカッションをバックに俺もインプロヴァイゼイションしてみてぇー！」みたいな… 

(しかめっ面のエルヴィン・ジョーンズを横に… w)

ちなみに彼のアルバム “Coltrane” に入ってる曲 “Tunji (Toon-gee) ” は、オラトゥンジに捧げられた曲です。

2曲目の ”ZUNGO” (アルバムのタイトル曲) のイントロなんか聞くと、”マリオン・ブラウン” (Marion Brown）あたりなんかも影響受けてんのかな？ とさえ感じます。

リラックスできると同時に、世界に大きく包まれているような感覚に陥る素敵なアルバムです。

“FLAMING DRUMS”

さて、最後はジャケットもカッコイイ3枚目。

太陽の日差しは衰えません。

よってダンスも続行です。w

はて、一曲目の、“Abana”って曲、どっかで聞いたような？


…と思っていたら、思い出しました。


2枚目のアルバムにもゲスト出演している、アジア系音楽のヴァイブをジャズと融合させたことで有名な “ユセフ・ラティーフ” (Yusef Lateef) が、”Jazz around the world” ってアルバムでこの曲を取り扱っています。

(なんか発見できてラッキーな気分 ♫)

このアルバムにもホーンは入っていますが、音的にはゲストミュージシャンの数が2枚目とくらべて少ない分、どちらかといえば一枚目に近い感じですかね。

ポジティブエナジーが爆発しています。

ダンサー達が、高速でケツを揺らして発電しているのが目に浮かびます。

枯れかけていた植物も、元気を取り戻して太陽に向かって“シャキーン” となるに違いありません。

(いや、必要なのは恐らく水？）

ヘコんでいるヒマなどこれっぽっちもありません。
