Lately, I’ve been following Gary Stevenson, a former top trader at Citibank in the UK and now a YouTuber fighting to fix economic inequality. Excitingly, he’s bringing his talk show to my local area, Hackney!

I couldn’t miss the chance to hear his words live as he continues to advocate for a wealth tax on the super-rich! So, I took my wife along and went to see him.

Hence, this article is my report on the event.

Here comes Gary!

The event was held at Hackney Empire, a theatre just a 20-minute walk from where I live.

Years ago, when I was in a band, I played at the front bar of this building. But right from the first song, a guitar string snapped, and I had to borrow an unfamiliar guitar from one of the other bands playing that night. It ended up being a disastrous performance—definitely a bitter memory.

Anyway, putting my own memories aside, the venue’s interior is steeped in history, giving it the charm of a long-established pub.

The audience is mostly in their late 20s to 40s, and to my surprise, there’s a noticeable number of women.

Our seats are in the fifth row from the front, which means we’ll have a great view of Gary. I’m really looking forward to it!

When it was time for the show to start, rapper and actor Jordan Stephens, who’s a football buddy of Gary’s, appeared to introduce him.

Then, Gary appeared from the side of the stage, wearing his trademark black hoodie with the No-Face print from Spirited Away, an Adidas tracksuit, red football socks, and Onitsuka Tiger shoes.

The audience welcomed him with warm applause and cheers.

Take care of yourself and reach out to others

The event is part of the promotion for the paperback release of Gary’s autobiography, “The Trading Game“, published by Penguin Books about a year ago.

And because of this, the talk revolved around the book, but Gary’s direct storytelling about the characters and dramatic moments made his personality shine through even more.

What stood out the most was the story of Gary becoming so obsessed with trading that “winning”—making more money than anyone else—became his everything. Meanwhile, Harry, who looked up to him like a star, got caught up with a crowd of brokers and ended up addicted to cocaine.

When Gary got fed up with Harry’s party lifestyle and confronted him, Harry said, “When was the last time you saw your dad? Why don’t you ever reach out to your friends? If you abandon me, there’ll be no one left for you to care about. You’ll turn into a heartless machine.” Later, Gary realised those words were painfully true.



Another interesting story was from Gary’s time working in Japan. He hated karaoke, but his boss told him, ‘Karaoke isn’t about singing perfectly—it’s about how much fun you bring to the people around you’. Hearing that, Gary thought, ‘That makes sense’.

Through these stories, Gary expressed his view that…


modern society presents us with a false choice: to live for ourselves or for others. Yet, this very notion is eroding communities, and in turn, fueling the deepening inequalities we see today.


His words carried a profound truth.

Some people are just struggling to get by, so the capacity to care for others varies from person to person. Even so, living for oneself and living for others are not choices we have to pick between. If we don’t balance both, something will inevitably go wrong.

I felt that this was the key takeaway from the talk.

It’s only the power of collective unity that can challenge those who possess enormous wealth!

“So, what is Gary trying to do to break down social inequality?”

The truth is, inequality is deliberately constructed by a handful of ultra-rich elites. The only way to challenge them is for everyone else to unite.

That’s why Gary is fighting to bring people together.

With their vast wealth and influence, they control the media, spreading misinformation and exploiting issues like immigration to manipulate certain groups of people. Their goal is to create conflict among ordinary citizens and keep them divided.

If only the public as a whole understood this truth. Unfortunately, many people are indifferent to politics, and once again, the media plays a role in steering attention away from political and environmental concerns.

Money is certainly important, but when “winning the competition” becomes synonymous with “earning more than anyone else”, life starts revolving around possessions as the ultimate status. In the process, empathy for others fades away.

The items in your possession may have been made by workers in developing countries toiling for hours in harsh environments, risking their health and lives. But since this reality is invisible to you, it likely never crosses your mind.

No matter how large the financial differences among ordinary people, they are insignificant compared to the immense wealth of a small ultra-rich class. Gary warns that if this situation is left unchecked, the general public will eventually be consumed by their greed, bringing society back to a feudal system.

Before that happens, it seems more likely that humanity will meet its end due to climate change…. But stopping them also means stopping climate change, doesn’t it?

Which means that unless we’re billionaires, we have no choice but to unite.



And that’s exactly why we need to embrace both self-interest and compassion for others.


Gary brought the heat again today. 🔥

ゲイリーさん登場！

会場は、家から歩いて20分ほどの場所にある劇場、ハックニー・エンパイア。


実は昔バンドをやっていた頃に、同じ建物内のフロントのバーで演奏したことがあるのだが、一曲目からいきなりギターの弦が切れて、対バンのメンバーに弾き慣れないギターを借りる羽目になり、散々なパフォーマンスをしてしまった苦い思い出がある。

…と、まぁ自分の事はさておき、会場の内装は歴史を感じさせる雰囲気に満ちていて、まるで老舗のパブにいるかのような趣アリ。

客層のメインは、20代後半から４0代といったところか…。意外にも女性客の姿が多い。



席は前から５列目。ゲイリーさんをかなり近くで見ることができるため、ワクワクする。

開演時間になると、ゲイリーさんとはフットボール仲間だという ラッパーで俳優のジョーダン・ステファンズ が登場し、彼を紹介。

すると、舞台袖からゲイリーさんが現れた。


おなじみの、映画『千と千尋の神隠し』のカオナシがプリントされた黒のパーカーに、アディダスのジャージ、赤のフットボール用ソックス、そしてオニツカタイガーのシューズ。

客席は温かい拍手と声援で彼を迎えた。

自分をケアし、他人にも手を差し伸べる

今回の公演は、約1年前に発売されたゲイリーさんの自伝小説 “The Trading Game“ のペーパーバック版がペンギンブックスから発売されることを記念したプロモーションの一環。


そのため、本の内容がトークの中心だったけど、登場人物にまつわるエピソードや、物語の緊迫した場面について直接語られ、ゲイリーさんの人柄がより鮮明に伝わるものだった。

特に印象的だったのは、トレーディングに没頭するあまり「勝つこと（＝誰よりも稼ぐこと）」がゲイリーさんの全てとなり、彼を崇拝していた弟分のハリーが、ブローカーの取り巻きとつるむうちにコカイン中毒になってしまったエピソード。

ハリーのパーティー三昧にうんざりし、口論になった際、ハリーは「親父さんに最後に会ったのはいつだよ？ 友達となんで連絡取らないんだよ？お前が俺を捨てる時は、面倒を見る人間がいなくなるわけだから、お前は心を失ったマシーンのようになってしまうんだぜ」と言った。後になって、その言葉がまさに真実だったことに気づかされたという。

また、日本で仕事をしていたときのエピソードも興味深い。カラオケが嫌いだったゲイリーさんに、当時の上司が「カラオケは上手く歌うことが大事なのではなく、どれだけ周りの人を喜ばせることができたかが重要なんだ」と言い、それを聞いて「なるほど」と思ったという話があった。



これらのエピソードを通じて、ゲイリーさんは

現代社会は『自分のために生きる』か『他人のために生きる』か、どちらかを選ばなければならないかのようになってしまっている。しかし、それが原因で『コミュニティ』が徐々に失われ、それこそが現在の格差社会の根源になっている

と語っていた。深い話だと思った。

生きていくのが精一杯の人もいるわけだから、人によって他人のことに構うことができる余裕の度合いは異なってくる。それでも「自分のために生きる」と「他人のために生きる」はどちらかを選ぶものではなく、私たちは両方やっていかないと、何かが途中で狂ってくる。

これが、今回のトークのメインメッセージだったように思います。

巨額の富を握る者たちに対抗できるのは、大衆の団結の力しかない！

「格差社会をぶち壊すために、ゲイリーさんは何をしようとしているのか？」



ってことですが、

格差社会は、ほんの一握りの超大富豪たちによって意図的に作り上げられているため、彼らに対抗するには、それ以外のすべての人々が団結するしかない。

ってことで、その大衆の力を結集させるために闘っているということになります。

相手は巨額の富と権力を握っているため、メディアを操って虚偽の情報を流したり、移民問題などを利用して一部の大衆を扇動したりすることで、一般市民同士が敵対するよう巧みに仕向けています。

大衆全員がこの事実を知っていればよいのですが、残念ながら政治に関心のない人も多く、さらに環境問題や政治への関心を逸らすよう、ここでもメディアが操作を行っています。




確かにお金は重要ですが、「競争に勝つこと＝誰よりも多くのお金を稼ぐこと」が人生の中心になってしまうと、「何を持っているか？」が最終的なステータスになり、他人を思いやる気持ちが薄れてしまいます。


あなたが持っているものは、発展途上国の人々が過酷な環境の中で長時間働き、命を削りながら作り上げたものかもしれません。しかし、その現実はあなたの目には見えないため、気に留めることもないでしょう。

たとえ一般市民の間で多少の経済格差があったとしても、世の中のごく一部の超大富豪たちとは比べものにならないため、ゲイリーさんは、このまま放置すれば、いずれ一般市民全体が彼らの欲望に飲み込まれ、最終的には封建社会に逆戻りしてしまうと警告しています。

その前に、気候変動によって人類の終わりの方が先に来そうですが……。
でも、彼らを止めることは、気候変動を食い止めることにもつながりますよね。

というわけで、どちらにせよ自分が billionaire でない限り、私たちは皆、団結しなければなりません。

そのためにも、「自分のために生きる」と「他人のために生きる」の両方を実践していく必要がある、ということですね。

Since its release in March 2024, it has rapidly attracted a large number of readers in many countries, including here in the UK.

“The Trading Game” is an invaluable autobiography that provides insight into the mind of its author.


Born into a working-class family, he became a highly successful trader at a very young age, but soon started questioning his career.

The book narrates his struggles and challenges as he quits his job and transforms into an activist.

Understanding what is happening in today’s global economy and realizing the urgent need for collective action to address the critical situation, Gary immediately launched his YouTube channel, Gary’s Economics, at the start of the pandemic to spread awareness.

Regarding the book’s content, there might be some overlap with the video clips where Gary talks about his life up to the present, which are hosted on other people’s YouTube channels.


However…

in fact, reading the book (or listening to the audiobook) is several times more interesting and impactful.

Therefore, in this article, the reasons are summarized.

Reader friendly for Japanese people!

The reason why this original English book is especially accessible for Japanese readers is that…

it begins with a scene in a Japanese restaurant, and the last quarter of the book is set in Japan!

I guess familiar place names and cultural references in the book create a sense of connection, which is a great factor in helping those who are not completely used to reading English books to read through to the end.

Reading about Japan through the eyes of a foreigner with a different cultural background, who describes it sometimes beautifully and sometimes humorously, is very refreshing in English.

It’s especially entertaining to read about Gary, who visited Japan not as a tourist but as a Citibank trader, being taken to Tokyo’s entertainment district by his colleagues as part of their ‘omotenashi’. His emotional reactions and how he handles the situation are portrayed in a very amusing way.

Furthermore, although he writes about it matter-of-factly, Gary’s determination to find learning opportunities to improve his Japanese is truly admirable.


After finishing the book, you’ll find yourself a fan of Gary.

It has emerged as a fantastic novel!

Autobiographies and memoirs related to politics or economics typically present events in succession, which is great for historical knowledge but honestly not very moving.

(I previously listened to the audiobook of former President Obama’s extremely thick book, and to be frank, it was dull!)

In contrast, Gary’s book is crafted like a novel, making it incredibly entertaining!

First of all, it appears that this was indeed the case, but the characters are simply amazing.

Compared to the other trading desks filled with snobbish, wealthy young men who graduated from elite universities with refined educations, Gary’s FX trading desk was full of nutcases from various backgrounds.

It’s fascinating to see how Gary, as the youngest trader at the company, strategizes his approach to learn about trading from these quirky and challenging senior traders.


The novel vividly portrays the everyday life and behind-the-scenes of the trading workplace, the movement of vast amounts of money, the relationships with brokers, and the tension surrounding the 2008 financial crisis, all of which are typically unfamiliar to ordinary people like us, making the situation palpable to readers.

From a personal standpoint, I felt a similarity to Jack Kerouac’s novels of the Beat Generation in the rapid pace of interactions with various characters, the clash of emotions, and the sense of despair as each day moves unseen towards a darker direction.

Listening to it as an audiobook is highly recommended!

I believe that the author’s emotions come across more directly when reading this book in its original English version (the Japanese version will be released next year?).

Furthermore, I highly recommend listening to it with Gary’s raw voice and his East London accent for a more authentic experience.

Speaking of the East London accent, some people might associate it with a gangster image, as heard in movies like “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” or “Green Street”. (lol)

This book is written in the author’s everyday language, complete with lots of swearing. (It’s a pretty normal scene if you’re living in East London…)

And one of the characters, Bill, who is from Liverpool, is at the peak of drunken swearing, and Gary’s impersonation of a Liverpool accent during this moment is fantastic.

By the way, Bill, the trader from Liverpool, is the one Gary admires most among his colleagues. When Gary lost $8 million in just one week and his PnL (Profit and Loss) went over $4 million in the red, he decided to revisit his textbooks. But then, his mentor intervened, slamming the book down and reprimanding him, “The real economy ain’t in no book! Look around you! See for yourself the closures, the homeless people under the bridge, the ads on the tube, your mum’s financial situation, etc.” and gave him a wake-up call.

Moreover, when you listen to the audiobook, you’ll realize how good Gary’s Japanese pronunciation is.

The contrast between his relaxed Japanese pronunciation and his tense moments of speaking in a native Cockney accent creates a fantastic gap in tone.

Summary

Given the way this book is written as a novel, it differs in style from his YouTube channel.

If you can relate to the challenges, frustrations, and despair Gary has faced as detailed in this book, you will gain a deeper understanding of how seriously he aims to save the world through his YouTube channel.

And the ending is super cool!

” I don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong anymore.“

“I don’t care about winning anymore. But, I shouldn’t fight alone next time. Join me for the next game.“

……an emotional ending.

「ザ・トレーディング・ゲーム」は、労働者階級の生まれながら若くしてトレーダーとなり、バリバリ稼ぎまくっていた著者が、自分のやっていることに疑問を感じ、仕事を辞め、現在の活動家になるまでの苦悩と格闘が描かれた、彼の心の中を知ることができる貴重な自伝です。



今日の世界経済において、何が起こっているのかを理解したと同時に、その危機的な状況をみんなに気付いてもらい、共に力を合わせ、早急に食い止めないとヤバイ！と悟ったゲイリーさんは、パンデミックが始まると、即座にYouTubeチャンネル Garys Economics を立ち上げ、発信し始めます。



本の内容的には、他の人がホストしているYouTubeチャンネルの中で、ゲイリーさんが、現在に至るまでの成り行きを語っているビデオクリップの内容と、何ヶ所か重複する部分があるかもしれませんが…

正直なところ、本で読む (またはオーディオブックで聴く) 方が数倍面白く、心に突き刺さります。

と言うわけで、今回の記事ではその理由をまとめています。

日本人にとって読みやすい！

なぜこの洋書が、日本人にとって読みやすいかと言うと、それは…

この本のしょっぱなの場面が、日本のレストランから始まり、さらに後半の4分の１は、日本が舞台となっているからです！

知っている地名や文化などが本の中に出てくるといった、ある種の親近感みたいなものは、洋書を読むことに完全に慣れていない方々が、最後まで読み終えるのにグッドな要素だと思います。

日本という国を、文化の異なる外国人の視点から見て、時に美しく、時に面白おかしく描写しているのを、英語で読むのはとても新鮮です。

特に、旅行者としてではなく、シティーバンクのトレーダーとして日本を訪れているゲイリーさんが、同僚たちに「おもてなし」として東京の歓楽街に連れて行かれて、そこで当惑しまくる際の感情描写や、彼の対応の仕方が最高に面白いです。

さらに、本人は淡々と書いていますが、ゲイリーさんが日本語を上達させるために、自ら学べる環境を探して飛び込んでいくアティチュードは、脱帽もの。

読み終わった後、あなたはゲイリーさんのファンとなっているでしょう。

素晴らしい小説として仕上がっている！

政治、または経済関連の自伝や告白本は、基本的に、出来事が立て続けに並べられるものが多いため、歴史的な知識を得るにはいいけど、正直言って感動が少ない！（アメリカのオバマ元大統領のクソ分厚い本を以前オーディオブックで聴いたことがあるけど、正直つまらん！）



それに比べ、ゲイリーさんの本は小説として仕上がっているため、メチャメチャ面白い！

まず、実際にそうだったようですが、とにかく登場人物のキャラがすごい。

エリート大学を卒業し、教養を身につけた、スノビーでお金持ちのお坊ちゃんたちがカタカタと音を鳴らして働いている他のトレーディングデスクと比べ、ゲイリーさんが働いていたFXトレードのデスクは、それぞれが異なるバックグランドを持ったつむり曲がりの変人だらけ。

最年少トレーダーとして入社したゲイリーさんが、これらの一癖も二癖もある、厄介な先輩トレーダー達からトレーディングについて学ぶために、いろいろと作戦を練って近づいていく姿は見ものです。

そして、私たちのような一般人が知る由も無い、トレーディングの職場の日常と裏舞台、莫大なお金の動き、ブローカーとの関係、2008年の金融危機を迎えるあたりの緊迫感が、小説として描かれているため、私たち読者に、状況が手に取るように伝わってきます。

個人的には、この次から次へと登場する人物とのやりとりのスピード感、そして感情のぶつかり合い、そして毎日が見えないまま、ダークな方向へ進んでいく絶望感が、ビートジェネレーションのジャック・ケルアックの小説に似たものがあると感じました。

オーディオブックで聴くのがおすすめ！

この本は、洋書で読むほうが (日本語ヴァージョンは来年発売？) 著者の感情の動きがダイレクトに伝わってくると僕は確信していますが、さらに言えば、イーストロンドンなまりのギャリーさんの生の声で内容を聞くのがオススメです。

イーストロンドンアクセントと言えば、イーストロンドンが舞台の映画、”Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” や、”Green Street” などで聞くことができるため、ギャングスターのイメージを持っている方も、中にはいらっしゃるかもしれませんね。（w）

何も飾らす、本人の普段の喋り方で書かれているこの本は、スウェアリングワードの連発。（イースト・ロンドンに住んでいたらごく普通の光景ですが…）



そして、登場人物の1人で、リバプール出身の*ビルさんが泥酔状態でスウェアリング最高潮になっている際の、ゲイリーさんによる、リバプールアクセントのモノマネが最高です。

ちなみにビル(Bill)さんは、ゲイリーさんが同僚の中で最も尊敬するリバプール生まれのトレーダー。
ゲイリーさんが、1週間で８百万ドルを失って、PnL(Profit and Loss)が、４百万ドル越えの赤字になった時に、教科書に戻ってもう一度勉強しようとしたところを、教科書をはたき落として「本当の経済は本になんか載ってねーよ！自分の周りを見ろ！店じまいに、増加するホームレス、地下鉄の広告、オカンの家計状況, etc. を自分の目で見て確かめろ！」と叱りつけて、喝を入れてくれた恩師。

さらにオーディオブックで聴くと、ゲイリーさんの日本語の発音がとても上手なことがわかります。


この緩やかな日本語をプロナウンスする時と、緊迫した場面での、ネイティブのコックニーアクセントで話す時の、口調のギャップがすごくいいです。

まとめ

以上のように、この本は小説として出来上がっているので、本質的に彼のYouTubeチャンネルとは、タイプが異なります。

この本を通して、ゲイリーさんが実際に経験してきたこと、悩んだこと、憤慨したこと、絶望したことを共感できたのなら、彼がいかにYouTubeチャンネルを通して、本気で世界を救おうとしているかが、さらに深く理解できると思います。

そして最後が超カッコいい！


「何が正しくて、何が間違っているかなんて、俺にはわからん。」

「もう勝負なんてどうでもいい。だけど、次は俺1人で戦うべきでは無い。次のゲームは、君もジョインしてくれ。」


と言う、感動の締めくくりです。

Who is Gary Stevenson?

Gary Stevenson was born in East London, UK.


East London was historically an industrial hub, so unlike the glamorous west side, it’s characterized by a lower-class district with a significant immigrant population.

Raised in a low-income household, he spent his early years in the vicinity of Canary Wharf, an area transformed by urban development in the late 1980s, and is dominated by skyscrapers where high-end businessmen work.


With his exceptional mathematical abilities evident since childhood (probably a child prodigy!), he went on to study at the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), an internationally acclaimed university for economics.

While still a student, Gary caught the attention of the prestigious Citibank and was recruited, and worked as a financial trader from 2008 to 2014.

Growing up in a poor working-class family, Gary was gobsmacked by the enormous £400,000 bonus he received there for the first time – almost twenty times his father’s yearly income – resulting in contemplation of various issues ever since.

As a result, Gary became increasingly frustrated with the rapid expansion of a system in modern society where wealth accumulates among the rich while the lower classes struggle to prosper, regardless of their earnings. This frustration, along with the indifference of economists towards this issue, led him to resign from his job as a financial trader. Following his studies at Oxford University, he began working to inform the general public about the dangers of the current situation.

The rich get richer → The poor get poorer

First, please watch the YouTube video posted by Gary in 2020 during the pandemic. (It will also be a great opportunity for English learners to practice their listening skills.)

How was it?


During the pandemic, offices and shops had to be closed, so in response, money was printed by the government in many countries and was distributed to alleviate people’s livelihoods.

However, Gary points out the fact that no one has raised the question of…

“Where did that money ultimately end up?“

The government is still in debt, and the money distributed to ordinary households and small businesses has not stayed in their hands… So what does this indicate?

Gary criticizes the government for taking such actions without considering where the money would end up beforehand, and also harshly criticizes professional economists for not discussing this fact. He urgently appeals to us, asking what it means that a vast amount of money has quickly ended up in the hands of the wealthy during this pandemic.

With numerous informative videos posted, it’s hard to pick just one, but here’s another one that effectively explains the concept of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.　

The title is “Shisan-Keizai” in Japanese.

The process of demolishing old houses and constructing new ones may evoke different images in Japan compared to the UK, but I think the mechanism behind it is essentially the same.

When wealth is accumulated among the rich, a portion of it is often invested in properties to assetize it.

As a result, property prices increase.

(For the super-rich, tens of millions of yen can come in annually through passive income alone.)

On the other hand, when middle-class individuals retire, they tend to sell their current homes, move to cheaper areas, and enjoy their retirement lifestyle with the money from the sale. (The properties put up for sale are typically purchased by the rich.)


As prices continue to rise, it becomes increasingly difficult for the children of the middle class’ next generation to afford a deposit when purchasing a home, even if they manage to find good jobs.

In contrast, the children of the wealthy next generation can easily afford to purchase homes because their parents provide the deposit for them. Even if they fail to secure high-paying jobs despite their efforts, they can easily enter the housing market.

As this cycle repeats, the wealth gap widens continuously. However, what dramatically accelerated this process during the pandemic was the massive transfer of wealth to the rich, hence widening the gap further.

Gary urges as many people as possible to become aware of this fact and emphasizes that now is the time for us to unite to prevent the wealth gap from widening further.

Middle class ➡︎ Financially strapped
Working class ➡︎ Homelessness on the rise

When this happens, the country becomes dominated by a few rich individuals, eventually leading to a return to the feudal society of yesteryears.

ゲイリー・スティーブンソンさんはどんな人？

ゲイリーさんは、イギリスは東ロンドンの出身。


ロンドンの東部は、もともと工業地帯であったため、華やかな西側とは対照的に、移民もたくさん住んでいる下層階級のエリア。


1980年代の後半から、都市開発によって建てられた “Canary Wharf” と呼ばれるエリア (高級取りのビジネスマンたちが働くビルが建ち並ぶ) 近辺の、貧乏な家庭で育ったそうです。



ゲイリーさんは、子供の頃から数学の才能が傑出していたため (おそらく天才児系!!!) 、世界的にも有名な経済大学 LSE(London School of Economics) に進学。

すると在学中に、世界に名をとどろかすシティーバンクから引き抜かれ、2008年から2014年の間、トレーダーとして活躍します。

労働者階級の貧乏な家庭で育ったゲイリーさんは、そこで最初にもらった膨大なボーナスの額40万ポンド(彼の父親が1年かけて稼ぐ額のほぼ20倍!)に度肝を抜かれて以来、いろいろと悩み続けます。

結果、裕福層にお金が集まり、貧民層がいくら稼いでも豊かになれないシステムが急激に広がっていく現代社会、そしてそれに目を向けようともしない経済学者たちに怒りをおぼえ、トレーダーの仕事をやめ、オックスフォード大学で勉強した後、現在の状況がいかに危険であるかを世間一般の人々に知ってもらうために活動を開始します。

ちなみにゲイリーさんの生い立ちを知ることができるビデオは、LBC (the London Broadcasting Company) radioの、James O’Brienさんによるインタビューがオススメです。

金持ちがどんどん金持ちになる →貧乏人がどんどん貧乏になる

まずはゲイリーさんが、パンデミックが起こった2020年にポストした下のYouTubeビデオを見てください。（英語学習者にとっては、リスニングの勉強にもなりますよ。）

いかがでしたか？


パンデミックの際には、オフィスや店を閉めなくてはならなかったので、その対策として、たくさんの国で、政府によってお金が印刷され、人々の生活の救済のためにそれらが配給されました。


しかしながら、

「そのお金が最終的にどこに辿り着いたのか？」

という疑問を、誰も投げかけていないという事実を、ゲイリーさんは指摘します。

政府は赤字を背負ったまま、そして救済金が配られた一般家庭や中小企業の手元にも、そのお金は残っていない… ってことは??? という話です。

ゲイリーさんは、お金が行き着く先を前もって考えずに、安易にこんな行動が政府によってなされたこと、そしてプロの経済学者たちが、この事実について何も話さないことを痛烈に批判するとともに、莫大な量のお金がこのパンミックを機に一気に裕福層の手に渡ったことが何を意味するのか？という事を私たちに切実に訴えかけています。

最後に、もう一つ…


たくさんの重要なビデオがポストされていて、この中から数をしぼるのは無理があるので、もう一つだけ「金持ちがどんどん金持ちになって、貧乏人がさらに貧乏になっていく構図」がわかりやすく説明された、次のビデオをフィーチャーしておきます。

タイトルは日本語で「資産経済」となります。

古い家を壊して、新しい家を建てる日本とイギリスではイメージが異なるかもしれませんが、仕組み的には同じことが言えると思います。

裕福層にお金が貯蓄されると、それを資産化するためにそのお金の一部は物件に投資されます。

すると、物件の値段が上がります。

（超裕福層ともなると、不労所得だけで何千万円という額が年間に入ってきます。）



一方で、中間層の人たちがリタイアする際には、今まで住んでいた家を売り払って、安いところに移り住み、売り払った時のお金で老後の生活を楽しむ傾向があります。（売りに出された物件は、裕福層によって購入されます。）


物価はどんどん上がっていくので、中間層の次の世代の子供たちは、たとえ頑張って良い職を見つけることができたとしても、家を購入する際に頭金を払うのが難しくなります。



これとは対照的に、裕福層の次世代の子供たちは、親が頭金を出してくれるので、たとえ努力した結果、高級取りの仕事に就けなかったとしても、簡単に家の購入に手を出すことができます。

これが繰り返されて、貧富の差はどんどん広がっていくわけですが、今回この速度を一気に早めたのがパンデミックの際に起こってしまった裕福層への大量の富の移動、というわけです。

ゲイリーさんは、この事実をできるだけたくさんの人に知ってもらい、貧富の差がこれ以上広がらないためにも、今こそ私たちは団結しなければならない、と訴えかけています。

中産階級 ➡︎ 金欠
労働者階級 ➡︎ ホームレス続出

となってくると、国が一部の超裕福層に支配されるようになり、いずれはひと昔前の封建社会に逆戻り、という構図が浮かび上がってきます。
